Facebook Bans Russian state media from advertising and monetizing content on its platform

Facebook has banned all Russian state media from advertising on its platform, according to a company official.

Nathaniel Gleicher, head of security policy at Facebook, said that Russian state media is now prohibited from running advertisements or monetizing content on its platform, adding that the new restrictions apply around the world.

In a tweet, Gleicher said that Facebook would continue to apply labels to Russian state media.

"We are now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world. We also continue to apply labels to additional Russian state media. These changes have already begun rolling out and will continue into the weekend," Gleicher said.

Facebook's move to restrict Russian state media from advertising or monetizing on their platform comes just hours after Twitter announced it was halting all advertising in Russia and Ukraine.

"We’re temporarily pausing advertisements in Ukraine and Russia to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it," Twitter announced.

That may be true, but I’m not sure Putin can rely on Xi alone. Additionally, if Putin is a giant pariah I can seen Xi becoming indifferent about his fate not wanting the headache of being associated by proxy by the western powers, especially if Xi can assert influence on a replacement. If Russia had a top 5 consumer economy I could see Xi sticking his neck out, but that isn’t the case.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday hailed the 13 Ukrainian border guards who were killed after refusing to surrender to a Russian warship, telling the Russians to "go f--- yourself."

The guards will posthumously receive the "Hero of Ukraine," the highest honor Ukraine can bestow, Zelenskyy said.

The border guards, stationed on Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, were told by the Russians, "I am a Russian warship. I ask you to lay down your arms and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unnecessary deaths. Otherwise, you will be bombed."

"Russian warship, go f--- yourself," came the reply.

Super complicated and messy situation, that.

The Russian Court for a few centuries were actually ethnic Germans, unlike the people they ruled. Their constant marrying out back to the fatherland kept them involved in conflicts they really had no place in.

Actual Russians haven't been running Russia all that long on the grand scheme of things, just a little over 100 years in this most current stretch.
