I mean look what he has to work with? Other than Jeremy Banks and maybe Theo Jackson, there is nobody else on that defensive unit that should ever be starting for an SEC team. Our defensive line can't get to the passer. Our DB's can't cover and most of our LBackers have no clue where to position themselves. The main problem is we can't get to the passer without blitzing leaving our DB's vulnerable when we do. And we have all seen how well this has worked out. We need a huge upgrade in defensive players.

Agreed. And we certainly arent going to have it next year unless we see some major improvements. We lose our best two back there.
it’s going to have to be the transfer portal. Recruits even if we are good in recruiting will need time to develop. We need just as much help at LB as the secondary.

I agree it’s not his fault but there is some talent there, just not enough. Young, Thomas, Baron all make plays. Butler had a great season. But defense needs 22 good players at least. Tennessee isn’t near that number. Not even close

Need a consistent pass rush as well. Front four has been decent, we still aren’t great there. LBer needs talent and depth there, secondary as well.

I think Willie Martinez is as much of a problem as the players. He wasn't much good the first time he was here either.

I wish I still had this kind of passion. I’m more like meh UT lost. This team was 7-6. I had very little expectations and I enjoyed this season. Several guys seemingly came out of nowhere and that was pretty awesome. Lots to look forward to next year. When UT starts trending towards 9-10+ wins a year hopefully I’ll start caring more. Right now … meh

Our defense just did show up today, I thought they had a B- type of year considering expectations but they treaded down as the season went.

We have one defensive player who made All-SEC 1st or 2nd team as voted on by the coaches. Theo Jackson made 2nd team. This is the issue.

We have one player who made 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or honorable mention of PFF all conference team. Theo Jackson made honorable mention.

We definitely need bodies. Capable ones. We were in position for picks and stops tonight but our guys just didn't make plays or let them make the play instead. Saw that all year. We'd spy the opposing QB, have a LB or SS there but they were physically incapable of making a play.

Once we failed to score in OT, I thought Banks should have pushed all chips to the center of the table. Should have brought everyone to line of scrimmage and tried to pressure Purdue into a mistake.
