“It didn’t go perfect for him early in the year. Man, he continued to put his nose down and only competed and worked harder,” Heupel said. “For him, in the offseason, being comfortable in what we’re doing, but being able to just go through quarterback school with us, understand the game of football better and get better fundamentally. It’s things that, when he gets back in January, we’ve already pinpointed what he can get better at. It’s just a constant growth and evolution of who you are as a player.”

“I just stayed patient and continued to work hard, because that’s all I know,” Hooker said. “Work hard and good things will come your way.”

“Coach Heup has really instilled a lot of confidence in me to go out there and just have fun,” Hooker said. When Hooker struggled before the season, he focused on his mistakes and not duplicating them. Coaches noticed and told him not to be so hard on himself, that he needed to focus more on having fun than not making mistakes.

“I love this offense,” Hooker said. “It gives us free range in decision-making and allows us to show off our arms and athletic ability.”

Unlike this past offseason, he’ll have nine months to prepare for the season fully entrenched as a starting quarterback.

“If you put the work in, accolades will come,” Hooker said. “I just focus on getting wins. That’s what’s important.”

First time since Dobbs we go into off season knowing AND being excited about who's at QB next year.

Incorrect, sir. ;) But I can also see why people would think it would be reign, and not rein. I had to research it myself.

'Free Rein' or 'Free Reign'?

From Merriam-Webster.com:
As you can see, rein is the word to use when implying holding back or granting freedom of action; reign, on the other hand, is reserved for the ruling over a people or land. "Free reign" might sound impressive to you but not to your editor or teacher.

In summary: Reign is royal authority, the influence and sway of a ruler, or one who resembles a ruler. Rein is the strap fastened to an animal (such as a horse or mule) by a bit, which allows a rider or driver to control the animal. If you rule over something you may be said to reign over it. If you are allowed a great deal of freedom you might be said to have free rein.

Somehow I don't remember everyone being excited about Dobbs. The next year of him was "is he the best we have type thing". Seem to remember folks worrying about his accuracy. But he turned out pretty good. NOW, for the first time in years we have a guy who really is the "can't wait til next season" type guy.

First of all, what we're reading is probably an app-generated transcript of talk that was electronically recorded. Frequently in press conference transcripts you'll see (yule sí) a lot of words that sound like the correct word, but aren't. (If you think I'm going to use the correct term "homophones" on this forum... know whey.)

So you were not correcting Hendon, but the spelling of a computer, or of a journalist who didn't take the time to run the transcript through a decent auto-correct--or apply his wet-ware (brain) to do his own spell czech.

Supersmo18, if you corrected a computer, then you're a hero among the hominoids! If you corrected a journalist, then you're a protector of Western civilization! Not a bad bit of work before 9:00am.

Another noteworthy quote from the article is HH acknowledging that Milton deserved to win the job initially:

Hooker wasn’t surprised. He saw what everyone else saw in Tennessee’s first few practices of preseason camp under Heupel.

“I came out, had a couple bad showings, and Joe was lighting it up,” Hooker said. “That’s how it goes.”
