Tackling improved pretty significantly from Jones is one example. They did "football" skills better. His S&C program was vastly superior to Jones.I am curious as to what made you think your second sentence was true. How was he a good teacher if technique when we had very little pass rush and our defense couldn’t line up correctly?
what Pruitt DID do, was make us BIGGER. You can hate him all you want, but he did do that.
I would argue bigger is still better on OL and at DT, and Pruitt helped us there. At LB you may have a point about Pruitt overemphasizing size, although HenryT got pushed around some when he tried to play smaller. To play devil's advocate, the trend nationally (especially on defense) is emphasizing speed over size. If this was 1990s SEC football, it would be fine but the game is tilted towards the offense today and it is played in space. Bigger on defense doesn't mean better.
So it sounds like none of our playmakers can break a tackle… jk but that’s what is frustrating about these scrimmagesAlso some notes from RTI podcast (posted this from Heupel press conference thread)
Trey talked to people inside the program also.
Confirmed that the Dline won the day. Defense had a couple 3 and outs but offense still had moments. Anderson Coby caught a TD, etc
Another really good tidbit that I heard on here and on 247 podcast is the tackling was really good!! I mean that is rare this early in camp, especially in this age where you can’t hardly practice it

We’ve got some burners on offense. Hyatt, Holiday, Calloway, Wright etc, some of the fastest in the league. I hope like heck they can break tackles, but they should be able to hurt db’s with their speed. We’ll see.So it sounds like none of our playmakers can break a tackle… jk but that’s what is frustrating about these scrimmages![]()
Well we did have the best practice QB in SEC history.Wasn't the offense always outperforming the D in the preseason under Pruitt and everyone was freaking out because that is the opposite of what you are supposed to see early in camp?
Seems like everything is progressing as well as can be expected with all things considered.
Not so certain regarding a teacher of the game. As a supposed defensive specialist he failed miserably here. Last years D was embarrassingly bad.I think Pruitt understood what a football player should "look like". I think he was a good teacher of the game- technique, defensive reads, etc.
His failure was the Peter Principle. He was promoted beyond the level of his competence. He just doesn't know how to be the leader of a whole team. That doesn't excuse his lack of integrity but he was unlikely to ever get the best out of team on a consistent basis.
I wonder if many of these false start types are or may be caused by the lack of or slow understanding of the system or just lack of football intelligence. When a brain does not react fast enough the early reaction to an anticipated situation usually happens.Just watched several videos on youtube concerning Heupel's up-tempo offense and false starts are very common or they were at UCF where they were 5th most penalized team in the nation. Yep defense might get a chance to get some subs in when that happens.
The better HC’s (no matter their technical skill level) are the select who MANAGE their assistants the most effectively and foster COMMUNICATION throughout the team. When that’s a mess…so is the tenure. Year 2 and near the end of the season and your DL can’t get lined up? You’re mismanaging a pretty salty teacher in Tracy Rocker, and one side of the roster doesn’t know what the other side’s doing. Not so certain regarding a teacher of the game. IMO he benefitted from almost always having giys who could naturally run faster and jump higher than most of the people they defended. My assumptuon is those guys almost all great work ethic and focus to improve their already elite talents.
It is much easier to look smart with better athletes
