I think Hyatt is more of a project than people realized, and he spent his first year here not really getting great coaching.

Velus Jones Jr. should be the stud WR we see break out in this offense this year. Feel like Hyatt and a few others could start to blossom later in the year though. I just hope Payton gives us something.

I think Velus is more of a gadget guy than a go to receiver. He’s been in college ball a long time without showing more than that.

Hyatt or one of the Jimmys have a better chance at stepping up and being the guy, IMO. Also, think Keyton has flashed at times if he can figure things out.

He’s only not shown it because he’s had to play behind a stacked USC WR core

Hoping the accolades he got from last year didn't make him think he had arrived. It's got to be something mental.

Not really, this is one reason Randy Moss slipped in the draft. The bad thing about a speedster who is usually a "deep ball threat" is that they rarely have great hands. They are used to just getting behind defenders and waiting on basically a ball to fall to them.

Slot guys (especially good slot guys) are typically better at catching anything and everything. Hyatt just needs more short route balls to get better at catching them is all. It's a different velocity on a throw that's coming on a 7 yard slant than a 20 yard post.

I have never heard, in my life "fart in a skillet" and I've been around some crazy ass hillbillies...

apparently not a new term either lol

Makes sense though, quick twitch is indeed what ya want in a punt returner.
I still don't get the analogy. Does it echo, does it stink worse, who farts in a skillet and how is that one cut and go?

Randy Moss dropped because of perceived bad character which wasn’t so much derived with his past issues. Everything physically he aced at the Combine. He had great mitts, it was simply not necessary to utilize him on possession routes at Marshall when he was a human cheat code. Questionable hands were always part of Terrell Owens scouting report tho.

How do you define "go-to" receiver though? Cause if it's based on YAC or TDs then Velus may not be the go-to receiver, but he could still lead the team in catches/targets.

Just like Moss' first year for the Vikings

Carter had just 1 more target but caught 9 more of them than Randy, but Randy averaged 6 yards more per catch and scored 5 more TDs. Carter though could still be argued to have been the "go-to" WR that year, since he ran more of the route tree and Moss benefited a lot from the deep ball which they threw often.

I think Velus has the best chance to lead the team in targets next year if he's healthy, because he will be targeted at every level and someone with Hyatt's speed may not.

Where have we heard that?
First I have heard this.

First practice report.

Austin Price for the entire Spring and Summer.

There certainly hasn't been anything about him being inaccurate. Frankly I think the poster I quoted just pulled that out because he's a mobile QB and assumed he can't throw an accurate ball.

There isn't some sweeping consensus, but let's not pretend we aren't all extrapolating here. Just like Jalin Hyatt dropping two balls in three days means he is a head case now and can't catch anything lol.

Not trying to be contrarian, but do you have data to back that up? Because, I think if you look at the data, you will see that it does not back that up.

Should be said that Calvin Johnson is the most physically gifted WR to ever play...and few will disagree.

6'5" 240lbs and runs 4.3s with a 45" vertical and the ability to catch anything and everything. Not to mention extremely intelligent, had a 41 in the Wonderlic

But there isn't any data to back up anyone except Rice is the king of WRs. Over 5400 yards more receiving than 2nd place, over 100 more receptions, 41 more TDs than 2nd place (Moss). Rice just had a different level to him, he's the closest to a MJ the NFL has ever seen imo.

I think this is accurate. What do WR do? Catch the ball, move the sticks and score TDs. Jerry Rice did it for years and years and did it better than anyone. Calvin Johnson was a freak and no doubt would have had much better numbers if he was not stuck in Detroit.

AP is enough said.

Calvin Johnson sadly went to Detroit which also helped shelf Barry Sanders in his prime. Sometimes being overworked and underappreciated wears you out...and if you're making the kind of money they were why keep taking the bashing for a franchise that clearly doesn't put effort into trying to be a SB caliber team.

Surely you are capable of seeing beyond total career numbers when discussing who the best WR is, right? You can't really be missing the topic of "who is the best at his position" vs "who had the greatest career" that badly?

I mean Calvin only played 9 seasons as well...but his career stats are laughable compared to Rice. You can HALF Rice's career down the middle and have 2 of Calvin Johnson's career numbers...that's flipping insane. I'm just happy I was able to watch Rice in his prime for a few years, and to me the closest WR to being that dominate has been Moss. Calvin was special though, but he was also benefiting from volume, dude only had 2 seasons with less than 137 targets.

And it's not like Rice was deadweight and just trying to pad stats (like Emmitt Smith in his last few seasons). Only twice did Rice not have 800 yards receiving and one of those he only caught 7 balls cause he was hurt, the other came in his last season at 42 when he played for 2 different teams. And even then had he gotten more targets he probably could have hit 800 receiving yards.
