my dad was a former all-american gymnast in college, followed by a 40-year career as a 27-time state championship high school gymnastics coach. he has coached beginners, and he's coached olympians and world champions. everyone gets "the twisties" at some point. it just happens. its not a choice, and its not a lack of preparation. its not something that can be muscled through, because that's when extreme injuries occur. its just extremely bad timing for biles. but make no mistake, shes one of the greatest gymnasts of all time, and the only people who are arguing otherwise don't know anything about gymnastics.

Don’t see how people can’t understand this part. A good friend of mines wife was a division 1 gymnast in college and she said the same. She said her college coach placed just as much emphasis on the mental side of the sport as the physical. If he noticed any of his team having issues with the mental side (confidence, focus, etc) then he would stop them from training for the day and sometimes for days at a time depending on the situation. Any second guess or hesitation can cause serious harm.

“I'm also not having as much fun,” Biles said, beginning to cry. “This Olympic Games, I wanted it to be for myself. I came in and felt I was still doing it for other people. So that just hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me, to please other people.”

She came in selfish and only in it for herself. She left selfish and in it only for herself

Edit: for an individual sport there's nothing wrong with being in it for yourself but the Olympics is more for your Country than yourself

some version of this happens ever olympiad. people tune into sports they normally don't (and sometimes they don't even do that!) and just don't understand why certain nuances of the sport are challenging. i keep seeing the suggestion that every olympic event should start with an average person doing them for reference, and it feels more and more necessary.

I understand what he is saying…. If you don’t compete then it doesn’t matter how talented you are…. I’m a fan of hers but her stepping out is inexcusable, imo.

declining to do a routine because her score would hurt her teammates shot at a medal and she might seriously injure herself is inexcusable. interesting.

it was her years of hard work and sacrifice. you think she owes you something? you think she owes anyone else anything?

And yet she hasn't once mentioned higher risk of injury.

Would she still be a gymnast if no one was watching or no $ to be made?

i don't know her personally, but going into gymnastics for the money is pretty silly. endorsement money for those outside of the world championship and olympic teams is extremely rare, and its actually a really expensive sport to get serious about. training can be very very expensive.

eta: i don't think you get as far as she has without truly loving the sport. its just too grueling on your body, and like i said, money is never really a factor for 99% of participants.

She did just the other day. One of many quotes, so easy to miss. But she seems well aware that a mistake in her sport could mean a broken neck or whatnot. "I didn’t want to go out there and do something dumb and get hurt and be negligent".

We get it, you are a fanboy.

But yes, she owes all Americans something. She took a spot on the U. S. A. Olympic Team. Then she chose to not perform when it was time to perform because she did not want to - not because she was injured.

It's not that hard to understand unless you are intentionally wanting to be a moran.

So they would do it if there is no fans? If no one at all was watching them, they would do it purely for love of the sport?

i mean, yeah, she rules. i'm a fan, and i generally root for americans at the olympics. weird seeing so many here *****ing on our athletes.

she doesn't owe you ****. she EARNED a spot on the olympic team by virtue of being the best to ever do it. she declined to do her routine because it would hurt her teammates chances at a medal and she might seriously injure herself. but you don't care.

you failing to understand the situation isn't her problem. it just makes you look like a moran.

have you ever been to a high school gymnastics meet? i have. they do it when no one is watching.
High school isn't Olympics. These athletes train for the olympics from a very early age, correct? Why? Why is the internal gratification of the sport not enough? Why do they want to compete on a global scale?

Athletes of this level know that they must compete both physically and mentally in the sport. Being able to master their emotions as well as their physical abilities is what makes them the best in the world.

I feel for her, she'll probably have more mental issues dealing with the fact that she quit and failed that aspect of being an Olympian.

If her failure was mental, I have a hard time believing she didn't recognize this well ahead of the Olympics. She took a place of an athlete who has worked just as hard and was better prepared mentally. She also eliminated a spot for another athlete who would have been an alternate.

Her failure to be both mentally and physically prepared for this level of competition illustrates that she is not the GOAT.

it's year 1. AGAIN. it's just a lot of "new", and it's a tall order for it to all come together in one abbreviated off season for a new staff.

i think the bar is very low right now, and i think there's some fatigue out there as far as what fans "should" expect. not sure that's a bad thing at the moment, if i'm being honest.

depth is the more pressing issue. especially on defense. front line talent is good enough to compete with everyone not named FL, Bama and GA. win them all? nah, can't get there yet. win more than we lose? sure. for whatever reason i think 3-1 in the non conf, and 3-5 in the SEC is about right for us this year. anything better than that...graaavy.

I think our fans are too mentally soft….. let’s freaking go!!!! Can’t wait till game one!
