Oklahoma and Texas have reached out to join the SEC (allegedly)

I’m not saying ACC would be the destination, I’m simply saying keeping options open allows you have some control of your destiny and allows you to have more leverage in what the SEC does.

If we can’t envision alternatives we are doomed to always be followers.

But if because of the sweet, sweet money we can’t do anything but accept the dictates of a conference office I suppose we’ll at least be able to rant about it on Volnation when they once again do something we don’t like.

The only conference with the prestige (and money) to suit Tennessee is the B1G. And that is not happening. Never. Cannot go independent because you'll lose a bunch of annual rivalry games. The money will be a fraction of that made as a member of the SEC. Forget about competing with UGA and Florida ever. What 4* & 5* players are going to want to come here when the big exposure is in the SEC schools?

Back when A&M came in, it was rumored that the SEC was in talks with Texas but Texas basically wanted to have an exalted position above the other members and the SEC lost interest.

The SEC may not want to invite Texas in to the conference. They may feel the juice is not worth the squeeze.
Their experience with the Longhorn Network was a significant humble sandwich.

So there is no line the SEC could cross that would convince you leaving would be preferable?

If the SEC is willing to negotiate unilaterally and keep the member ADs in the dark, it doesn't bode well for the future. I thought such changes required a vote by the member universities?

I’m sure this wasn’t done in the dark and the member institutions were kept abreast of the happenings.

I have to say, reading TexAgs and other Texas A&M forums in the past 24 hours has been eye-opening. The intensity of their complex with regard to Texas is staggering. "They'll ruin the SEC." "They'll poison everything and take over the conference in ten years." "They use their money to control everything, and they'll boss the SEC around too." "You don't understand, they ruin everything, and they'll ruin the SEC too." Don't get me wrong, I lived in Austin for a long time and know very well how the University of Texas can be about things - they do love to throw their money around like it means something - but good grief, the fear radiating off the Aggies is overpowering. Like an animal that's been beaten so much it automatically hides under the table as soon as it sees its abuser.

No. If it came to that we need to just shutter the athletic program.

Now you get it. There indeed are limits to what we should accept from the SEC.

Now just open yourself to the possibility that there could be options better than ending the program, if those lines were crossed.

Assumes money is the only determinant. I don’t think it should be.
Maybe not, but it is. Tennessee has always made that very clear. It's why they've never spent the money to hire a good football coach. No matter who they hire, fans still show up and make the university money.

Too open-ended a question. If the SEC insisted Tennessee's schedule every year included the the top five SEC teams from the previous year and we must spot Vandy 42 points to boot, I would have an issue of course.

Perhaps you have some ideas to put forth?

This! Texas for sure misbehaves, but the magnitude of Aggie bitterness is amazing.

I hope you are right. Texas has a poor track record of playing well with others and they haven't changed for the better. If Texas joins the SEC, they will eventually destroy it.

My hope is that the Texas legislature manages to queer the deal.

The money alone would dictate you ain’t going anywhere.

Then, try telling generations of Tennessee grads and fans you’re going to the ACC.

A couple people here may like it, but I am willing to bet 90% or more of the fan base would be livid
90% is a VAST understatement. 99.999999% would be livid. likely 3-4 people would be okay.

If you think some of us are less than thrilled, check out TexAgs. The Aggies are absolutely paranoid about Texas. For over a decade, they've owned the exclusive SEC franchise in Texas. Telling a high schooler that by going to A&M, they would be playing in the best conference in football was a powerful selling point. Now, that's all gone.
