Was there ever

Nope and yet LSU with a second string QB and RB ran the ball right down their throats to keep us out of another NC game!
It was more humiliating at the time than it is now. At least with 20 years of hindsight, you realize that Saban was the GOAT and you begin to understand how it happened, we just didn't know it then.

LSU didn't win because of Saban in 2001. They won because no one on Tennessee's staff had the competence to make adjustments to account for Matt Mauck's runs. LSU's coaches have gone on record as saying they were shocked Tennessee never adjusted and decided to keep calling the same stupid plays because Tennessee didn't seem interested in changing their defensive philosophy. Saban is an all-time great coach, but the only thing LSU did in particular to win that 2001 SECCG was to keep calling the same handful of plays and let Tennessee continue to screw itself over.

That defense had Henderson, Haynesworth, Overstreet, Burnett, Moore, Stevenson, Lott, Greer - just no excuses to be found there. No reason that defense should have lost that game. Lost in the clouds. Too much partying, too many roses on the brain.

IIRC, it was a slow developing draw over and over!

The fumbles in the second half by Stephens and Stallworth, both of which led to touchdowns, didn’t help matters.

The beginning of our downward spiral.

Cortez Kennedy and Russell Maryland were on the same team.

That's the only combo I can think of.

Russell Maryland and Jerome Brown were on the same team, but not sure how much they truly played together.

Honorable mention to Richard Seymour and Marcus Stroud

Thank God they kept us from playing Miami.
We had enough talent to beat Miami. Casey Clausen was a better qb than ken Dorsey, plus we had Stallworth and kelly Washington at wr. Jason Witten at te. Just because espn loves to blow smoke up that Miami teams rear end doesn’t mean they were unbeatable.

They would have embarrassed us. It took a miracle game from Stephens for us to beat UF. We managed just 13 points against Arkansas. Kentucky scored 35 and we barely beat them by 3. Memphis put 28 on us. We barely beat SC. We beat an unranked Syracuse 33-9. Miami beat that same team (which was 15th at the time) 59-0.

Our 2001 team wasn’t as good as some fans want to think.

And some of our "fans" take joy in constant self-flagellation.

Saban coached one of his worst games. Even his wife said, why did you go for it on 4th down in your own territory. She said his stupidest decision ever on the field. They won in spite of Sabans blunder and UT not taking advantage. Also, the Voodoo that Rohan's mother put on the Vols.

I hate Saban but you give the man his due. When he took the job at LSU, exactly zero of his Michigan St assistants wanted to join him. So he assembled an entirely new coaching staff. He had a couple of retreads like Gary Gibbs as his DC. But he threw in Muschamp (LB) and Dooley (TE) when they were very young. But he grabbed Fisher with no Power 5 OC experience. And he outcoached Chavis that night. Fulmer wanted loyalty and that’s why we plateaued.

Just remember when Heupel is assembling his coaching staff, he may be looking for competence over experience.

Sorry, but you made some really dumb points above.

-You seem to be saying Miami beat a much better Syracuse team than we did. But it was in fact the SAME Syracuse team.

-The USCe team we “barely beat” ended up ranked 13th in the country after handling Ohio State in the Outback Bowl.

-The 13 points against Arky was a bad weather game against a sky high team playing in front of 70K home fans, a record crowd at Arky by 20K. Our Offense sputtered in 1st half, but we absolutely kicked their asses on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes. Stephens ran for 200+ yards, Arky had ZERO FIRST DOWNS in 2nd half and less than 100 TOTAL YARDS IN THE GAME. We played a damn good game in a tough environment. Yeah, Fulmer was ultra conservative that night since he could be.

-You mentioned a “miracle” night by Stephens was needed to beat UF. Stephens had several great games in 2001- should have won the Doak Walker IMO. Our OL and WR downfield blocking had a lot to do with Stephens’ runs. I thought the miracle was that UF made it a game despite getting physically whipped. Grossman was “miraculous”. Our NFL HOF TE dropped or fumbled everything in the 1st Half. If we had official replays in 2001, multiple big calls on field would have been changed in our favor.

-Of the 28 points Memphis “put on us”, 21 were garbage time 4th Quarter scores. We led 42-7 in the 4th, and finished with 49.

-You said Miami would have embarrassed us. We’ll never know. UF was better than anyone Miami played that year. Most thought UF would beat us handily in Gainesville, including Vegas, and we know how that turned out.

Also, you didn’t mention our wins at ND and Bama, or us making those antlers (or whatever those stripes are) on Michigan’s helmets wiggle. If we’re cherry picking, Miami played in the Big East conference, scored 17 against Boston College and was lucky to beat VA Tech. They weren’t unbeatable.

One of my favorite players, always gave 110%.
