What's really sad is that Fauci is just a symbolic reminder of the state that federal bureaucracies are in. There are Faucis spread through all the fed organizations. The CDC is probably more competent than most of the rest - like the Dept of Education. Homeland is a complete disaster from top to bottom. FEMA can't even find its bottom with all hands and a searchlight. The intelligence agencies are probably as rogue as we think they are, and the FBI is trying to catch up to them.

Fauci was where he was when Trump got there. Generally the saying is you don't change horses in midstream - meaning that's a crisis point, and generally speaking a pandemic is considered a crisis. The question really is whether there was anyone more competent than Fauci near the top of the CDC - and who in the administration might have been able to figure that out. The problem is how do you really evaluate federal bureaucracies, and how many administrations does it take to grow real incompetence.
