2021 Countdown to Bowling Green

In 1965, Tennessee's most complete game all season game against seventh ranked Georgia Tech, coached by Hall of Fame coach Bobby Dodd who had been an All-American quarterback at Tennessee for Bob Neyland
Two games after the horrific car accident that killed 3 coaches, Charlie Fulton helped the Vols to defeat the #7 ranked Yellow Jackets 21-7. Fulton threw for 101 yards while rushing for 133 yards.

Could not find a pic of Fulton vs Ga Tech.

Homecoming, 2005, was full of fireworks, records being set, and uncertainty. What was supposed to be an easy victory turned into a nail-bitter. Tyler Bray set a UT record with 530 yards passing and 5 TDs, Cordarrelle Patterson had over 200 yards receiving, and Justin Hunter caught 3 TD passes, but it wasn’t enough. With just under a minute and a half, Marlin Lane scored his second touchdown, giving UT a 55-48 victory over Troy. Forgotten in the passing stats is Lane’s 19 carries for 132 yards and 2 TDs.

In the long list of great UT receivers, Larry Seivers is near the top. In the 1976 game vs Clemson, Seivers tied a Tennessee record with 11 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown in the 21-19 victory. Seivers is the only 2X consensus All-American received in Vols history. #retire89

How good was Gene McEver? General Neyland said, “ the best player I ever coached ... the best I ever saw," That praise sums up UT’s first All-American. His 1929 season is one of the best in school history. McEver led the nation with 130 total points, including 30 (5 TDs and 3 extra points in the South Carolina game.) McEver was the first Volunteer voted into the College Football HOF in 1954. UT’s record with him in the backfield.......27-0-3. Best ever???? Yep!

1958 wasn’t the best of years for the Vols, but a bright sport was a familiar name, Majors. Bill Majors led the team in passing and rushing, and was the punter. In the season finale, Majors threw a touchdown pass and rushed for 128 yards in the 10-6 victory over #15th ranked Vanderbilt.

Johnny's brother Joe was quarterback for Florida State from 1957-1959. He them to a 7-3 regular season record and the Bluegrass Bowl against Oklahoma State in 1958. His 1958 team beat Tennessee in Knoxville 10-0.

Yep. Corso, and most old school 'Nole fans say, that the UT victory was the biggest win in the schools history.

When I went to FSU, on an "unofficial" visit, and met with the golf coach, I met one of the assistant football coaches. When he found out I was from Tennessee, he mentioned the '58 game.

EDIT: This was a decade before the National Championship Game

oooops. I knew that and just had a typo. Thanks for clearing it up.

I get it, my man. Brain f*rts are part of the territory. I once switched a general's name in a Maxim post about 1/2 way through and did so for the rest of the piece. I didn't pick up on it for two or three days.

1951 was a banner year for the Vols and Hank Lauricella. Hank led the Vols to a National Championship and set the record for rushing yards in a season with 881, which would last for 20 years. On a cold November day in ‘51, UT traveled to Lexington to face #7 UK. The defense shut out the high scoring Cats 28-0 and Lauricella ran all over them for 127 yards.

In 1978, Roland James played most of the season with a broken thumb. James still made 46 tackles and had 7 interceptions for 126 return yards, including a 90 yard TD vs Ole Miss. He was an AP and UPI All-SEC selection.

I'll give you the #retire27 also. Between Lauricella and Al Wilson, that's more than reason enough.
