2021 Countdown to Bowling Green

Kelsey Finch.............99 yard run...still lost to UF
Johnny got really angry at Doug Dickey because Florida had a 23-17 lead with less than a minute left in the game and Florida went for it on 4th down from the 10 yard line. Florida finished 1977 with a 6-4-1 record and Doug Dickey was on the hotseat.

That's not the game with the "brawl," is it????

142 days........

Ya get a 2fer today.....

Halloween, 2009, UT hosted USCe. Jonathan Crompton and the Vols warmed up as usual in traditional orange jerseys, but came out before game time in black tops for the first time since 1922. Crompton didn’t light up the statistics, but did what was needed in the 31-13 victory. Crompton was 12-24 for 142 yards and 2 TDs.

Also, during the 2009 season, Crompton attempted 142 consecutive passes without and interception. That is the 3rd most in UT history.

I know this opinion is not shared by everyone on this board, but I still like those black jerseys. To be fair, maybe the result of that game has something to do with it.

Wow, does that cover bring back some memories.

Fast forward six years to 1975. I was a freshman in Army ROTC when a cadet officer I shared a class with said, "Yo, Gang, get over here."

He then outlined an important and dangerous mission I had been chosen for.

We strapping lads from Army ROTC and some of the Zoomies from AFROTC were to pair off with members of Angel Flight and march out onto Shields-Watkins Field at halftime of the Utah game to spell out "A" and "AF" for Veterans Day while the POTSMB played appropriate military tunes.

I was paired with a Gold Medalist in the "Nordic Combined"* - hair, face, body ... Wow!

Bittersweet:

The gig came with tickets (in the adult section, no less) for our parents/significant others. I took my Mom and Dad. As I was driving about looking for somewhere to park, a UT cop spotted my uniform and motioned me into the lot behind the Communications Building. Dad was 71 at the time and needed to be relatively close. I thanked the man, escorted my parents to their seats and then joined up with the other cadets.

After halftime, I went up and sat with my folks.

Dad passed away in 1978 and this was the last time he and I went to a game of any kind.

That "for the duration"bit turned out to be for the 1943 season only.

The Vols returned to SEC play in 1944 and ended with a 7-1-1 record under Coach John Barnhill. The only two blemishes were a 0-0 tie with Alabama in Knoxville and a 25-0 loss to USC in the Rose Bowl.

Barnhill would coach the Vols for four seasons ('41, 42, 44 and '45) while The Gen'rul was off "Gen'rul-ing" having been called up in 1941. His overall record was a more than respectable 35-5-2, with appearances in the 1943 Sugar Bowl (won 14-7 over Tulsa) and the aforementioned 1945 Rose Bowl.

Barnhill was then hired as head coach at Arkansas from 1946-49. The Pigs won the Southwest Conference title in 46. Coach Barnhill was diagnosed with MS in '49 and stepped down as Head Hog Caller and was named AD. He served in that role until he retired and was succeeded by the legendary Frank Broyles in 1971. His record at Fayetteville was 22-17-3.

Coach Barnhill passed away in 1973 in Fayetteville.
