I’ve previously posted that the apparent problem with our defense last year according to the data was our pass defense. I’ve spent some time digging deeper into the data to see if I could figure out more specifically what the problem was. jmo.

According to Football Outsiders we had the 2nd best defensive line in the conference last year and owing to personnel losses at Georgia, who was the only team better than us, we could have the best DL in the conference this year. jmo.

Using a combination of data sources and analysis this is what I’ve come up with. We were very efficient against the run, moreso on passing downs, but still one of the best on standard downs. jmo.

It looks to me like we were hugely better against the pass on passing downs than we were on standard downs. Our inability to consistently defend the pass on standard downs appears to be what torpedoed our pass defense overall. Sorry - I don't yet have a chart for this. jmo.

Why is this important? My theory is that it may not have been our secondary personnel that was causing us problems in the back end last year. My theory is that it was likely the play-caller that was putting us in a vulnerable position vs the pass on standard downs. I suspect opposing offenses figured out early on that Pruitt was often loading the box on standard downs to try to help out our overrated linebackers against the run and this came at the expense of our secondary guys. jmo.

Addition by subtraction: Subtract 1 Jeremy Pruitt, Add 3.5 additional wins. jmo.

But it’s not all on Pruitt. Our scoring defense ranked 7th in the conference last year but if you take out Guarantano scoring for the other team our true scoring defense moves up to 4th best in the conference, behind UGA, A&M, and UA. jmo.

Addition by Subtraction: Subtract 1 Jarrett Guarantano, Add 2.5 additional wins. jmo.

It's really just simple math. I figure if Tim Banks knows what Asparagus is we could potentially have a top 25 defense this year. jmo.

you get a like just fir asparagus.

The coach is not the important part of the equation..... it’s changing the culture and what people think about the university..... As for the coach, I have no doubt that JH will make us fun and exciting even if it doesn’t eventually lead to championships I would much rather have him than malzahn.

I think that most of us that have stuck with this obsession of UT football!, Despite its terrible effects on our emotions and personal lives, are just so shell shocked that we dint know what to think.
Ssince Fulmer, we’ve tried four uniquely different types of coaching personalities. Idont know where or how Heupel will be defined In compariso. Can he recruit at a high level? If not, can he Coach up what he does get?
im at least glad that he can string together two grammatically correct sentences so that I don’t have to any longer be embarrassed to be a UT grad.
plus, he seems like a decent human being.
but, my Vol Derangement Syndrome won’t allow me to get my hopes up again as far as wins and losses on the field are concerned.

Keeping 2 LBs on the field Vs 4 WR sets and asking our $ backer to post slot Ys/WRs is why we were so bad. Everywhere else was solid

Knew Dooley wasn’t the guy from the start. Absolutely nothing from his history said he would succeed.

I thought Butch could be successful and he had moments.

Pruitt never fit in here. Didn’t really try to either. Recruited well (Fulmer quote).

I think Heupel is comparable to Butch. Has a chance to be successful. Please don’t make Butch like mistakes. Stay on the offensive side of the ball. Trust the guys you hired to be successful on defense.

I’m rooting for the guy. Not forming an opinion for awhile.

One huge difference: Nobody ever called Butch a genius about anything and he was completely dependent on the competence of his staff. CJH has demonstrated excellence as both a player and a coach, and there are solid reasons to believe that his weak-ish last season was an outlier. With a solid 2020 season, nobody would be questioning his ability.

yeah. we paid UCF how many millions and somehow they wound up with the better head coach? not impressed. he was cocksure when he walked in the door but looked like a scalded dog after JF and TE turned down the job. Face it, his plan failed and now we are living out the emergency backup option.

Gus stinks, his offense has gotten progressively worse

I’m not surprised. You can’t reason somebody out of a position they didn’t reason their way into.
🤣 unlike you I am not blinded by worship of the NBA almighties that throw millions at kids who never pan out to be stars, remember we were talking about "lottery picks", so the morons suck imo...but you think they are brilliant alchemists...so have fun with that.

It’s been years since I ran the reports, but you need one of the elite packages. Do you have access to the college video data resource?
Have elite afaik.

Their dropbox video folders? Did a couple years ago, may still. They never turned my PFF access off and it's been years 😅

You lost me at 'special teams+return game'. Save everyone time and stop the wind sprints for the backups. Just give everyone the ball at the 25 on kickoffs and make it a 35 yard flip of field position on punts. Just need a guy to kick extra points and FG. The rest of the "special teams" is a waste of time with the way they're set up now. The days of seeing special teams being of importance are long, long gone.
Everybody thinks STs are a waste until you lose games because of bad STs.
