Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

My initial assessment after this hire was similar to yours I think. I thought it was possible recruiting might drop to a 50-year low. As the staff filled out I was encourage with the hires of Garner, Burns, Jean-Mary, Mack, and Banks because we were landing guys with recruiting ability. One of the complaints UCF fans had about JH was in their view recruiting under JH was trending down. After first listening to him I could see why that might be. He comes across to me more as a geometry teacher than a head football coach. Still, I thought with the staff hires he was building staff strength in an area that he himself might be weak in. That provided some hope.

The average tenure of a head coach for an FBS football team is 3.8 years. 12 of the 14 SEC schools have replaced their coaching staffs at least once since 2015, some more than once. I gave and still give JH about a 15% chance of being successful here. That’s my expectations.

When I was a very young kid every week when the polls came out in the newspaper I’d sit down and go through them and any football magazines I had for reference, first to see where we were ranked and then to figure out if any of the teams ranked ahead of us were playing anyone that week where they could hopefully lose so we could move up. In 10 days I’ll be 65 years old. I’ve been at this for over 50 years and there’s only ever been one team that I cared about in college football.

I’ve been with my Dad on the way to a Spring game where we totaled our car and after getting done with the police report made our way back home and got mom’s car and still made it to the game. I was there when the artful dodger was carried off the field to the hospital. I can still feel the electricity in Neyland when after halftime he came running out of the tunnel onto the field to resume the fight. He had 2 broken legs, 4 cracked ribs, was in a full body cast, and was bleeding profusely from the shoulder of his throwing arm. He wasn’t going to quit and neither was I, never.

I was in Neyland in 1984 with 3 friends from Alabama for the TSIO. As the game was winding down Alabama was in firm control. It looked hopeless. I remember thinking at the time we’d literally need a miracle to comeback. I’m talking the real thing here not some good luck. I swear – Tony Robinson and Johnny Jones did just that. It was the best ride home from Knoxville I ever had in my life, to this very day. I still can’t believe they pulled it off but they did.

I was there with my son for Peyton's first spring game. We were discussing the QBs as we left the stadium and he thought Jerry Colquitt was the better QB. I seriously considered making him walk home. He was young. We all made mistakes when we were young.

My dad passed away in 1982 but my mom was around for 12 more years. I remember the time she gathered me and my brothers together to tell us that she wanted to see one last game at Neyland. It was getting increasingly difficult for her to get around so she would need our help. We had 2 cars of people make the trip. We went to the student center, the book store, her favorite place on campus to eat. It is one of the best memories of Tennessee football I could ever have. I can’t even begin to remember who we played that day. I just knew in our family we’d won in a blowout.

Right now my most realistic honest to God expectations for our 2021 football season is
15-0
OMG...that was awesome..your best post ever..and you suck for making my eyes leak 🥲

For all you feckless little dweebs out there...THAT is what it means to be a Volunteer For Life...I don't know when...I don't know how ir who will make it happen...but we will be back, and if we don't...guys like you and me...We will still be Volunteers For Life.

How do you know they got the better head coach? JH is 28-8 as a head coach and now he is at a big school where he can actually win a championship. Gus just got fired. But keep on bringing negativity with every post. JH could be a disaster or he could be a great hire. Only time will tell.
Two kinds of people in the world who spend time in "what ifs".... 1. What if nothing worksout? 2. What if things work out? Both are basically a waste of time since you don't know until you know. One makes you miserable, you want others to be miserable with you and you comfort yourself that you're just a realist. The other makes you happy, and your wasted time is much more fun. 15-0!!!!!

Wow Delta 8 is now at gas stations. Cheaper than 3chi. The clerk showed me her own pen as we spoke 😅

The scientists beat the regulators to the punch. Guess we don't need em now? 🤔
They are going to shut that Delta 8 stuff down in our state soon, according to a shop owner I talk to over in Corbin. You're right, they got one over on a loophole, but anti-MJ states are working on writing legislation now to kill it.

Sorry if it’s already been discussed, but I’ve noticed on several different occasions the coaches (including Heupel) wearing headsets during practice. Have we ever seen that from previous coaching staffs?
No, but good catch. and i like it. Much better way of communication between the coaches.

The coach is not the important part of the equation..... it’s changing the culture and what people think about the university..... As for the coach, I have no doubt that JH will make us fun and exciting even if it doesn’t eventually lead to championships I would much rather have him than malzahn.
Please don't engage him. We didn't hire Meyer, Saban or Chip Kelly. He was not going to be happy unless it was one of those three.

Addition by Subtraction -

I’ve previously posted that the apparent problem with our defense last year according to the data was our pass defense. I’ve spent some time digging deeper into the data to see if I could figure out more specifically what the problem was. jmo.

According to Football Outsiders we had the 2nd best defensive line in the conference last year and owing to personnel losses at Georgia, who was the only team better than us, we could have the best DL in the conference this year. jmo.

Using a combination of data sources and analysis this is what I’ve come up with. We were very efficient against the run, moreso on passing downs, but still one of the best on standard downs. jmo.

It looks to me like we were hugely better against the pass on passing downs than we were on standard downs. Our inability to consistently defend the pass on standard downs appears to be what torpedoed our pass defense overall. Sorry - I don't yet have a chart for this. jmo.

Why is this important? My theory is that it may not have been our secondary personnel that was causing us problems in the back end last year. My theory is that it was likely the play-caller that was putting us in a vulnerable position vs the pass on standard downs. I suspect opposing offenses figured out early on that Pruitt was often loading the box on standard downs to try to help out our overrated linebackers against the run and this came at the expense of our secondary guys. jmo.

Addition by subtraction: Subtract 1 Jeremy Pruitt, Add 3.5 additional wins. jmo.

But it’s not all on Pruitt. Our scoring defense ranked 7th in the conference last year but if you take out Guarantano scoring for the other team our true scoring defense moves up to 4th best in the conference, behind UGA, A&M, and UA. jmo.

Addition by Subtraction: Subtract 1 Jarrett Guarantano, Add 2.5 additional wins. jmo.

It's really just simple math. I figure if Tim Banks knows what Asparagus is we could potentially have a top 25 defense this year. jmo.
Pruitt was obsessed with stopping the run. Felt like he gave up a lot to accomplish it.

He's a man of the past, a mid-2000s CBS gameday "whichever team wins the rushing battle has won in the UF vs UT series the last 15 years" stat kind of guy. Why our LBs looked stout vs the run and graded out so terribly vs the pass. He probably had a huge smile on his face as we completely shut down UF's run game last year...as they passed for 433 yards.

He's a guy attached to his style and time, not one to adapt. Don't feel Hype is at all attached to one thing or another. Follow, if not create, best practices, optimal strats, and metas.

yeah. we paid UCF how many millions and somehow they wound up with the better head coach? not impressed. he was cocksure when he walked in the door but looked like a scalded dog after JF and TE turned down the job. Face it, his plan failed and now we are living out the emergency backup option.
We are in a better "known" situation with Heupel than with TE and I don't like JF. His personality is punchable and he is dull like Cuonzo.
