Comparing 2020 NFL opening day rosters to recruiting ratings and distribution across college football conferences and within the SEC. Breakdown of NFL rosters by conference & team is from the NCAA. Draft data is from the NFL/Saturday Down South and NFL Roster talent distribution is my informed estimate.

I think generally it’s accepted that 3-stars and below for the most part require more time to develop sort of like late bloomers compared to the natural talent of the highly sought after high school stars that get most of the attention in the college recruiting process.

Around 2/3rds of all current NFL players were rated 3-star or lower coming out of high school. The edge that teams like Alabama have with their lead in talent is how soon those guys are able to make an impact. They for the most part are ahead of the lower rated guys coming out of high school but by the time they all get to the NFL the gap has closed significantly.

With a lesser roster than teams like Alabama opponents get their best shot at the Tide when their roster is much older and has a lot of chemistry from having played together for 3+ years.

The point is it's likely unwise to judge a 3-star or less before his time or, put another way, some of those 3-stars we had that "sucked" while they were here then went on to make millions in the NFL thank you, each and all, for your tireless patience as they developed into top flight professionals. Time was on their side. jmo.

Hey guys, new job has been killing me this week and so I apologize for the "thanks Jimmy" question, but can we confirm that Toot is back and going to play this fall, or is it still up in the air but he's on campus and we are waiting? I haven't been able to get on for the past 3-4 days...

Thankful for you bringing football to talk about in the thread.

The thing that jumps off the page to me is that we are now #9 in total NFL players. At one time during Fulmer's days we led or were #2 in the nation. As I recall it was nearly always over 40 players in the NFL. Yes, that speaks to recruiting. It speaks louder to lack of development IMO. The program is not even getting many of its 4* players into the league, much less the 3*'s. That's no surprise with Dools and Botch. We all thought it would change with Pruitt and especially on D. It didn't and actually may have worsened.

Which speaks to why it was so important to hire coaches who could develop talent regardless of their recruiting abilities. Tennessee can attract a lot of 3 and 4* talent by just being Tennessee. We are not going to immediately start taking Bama and UGA elite recruits away from them. When you combine that with the pulls Clemson, Ohio State and others make in the region - we are going to be limited for awhile. So we have to develop to build the program as Pinkel did at Mizzou prior to his retirement. Once he left they reverted to norm. But since he did it at Mizzou, we should much more be able to do the same here with the right staff because our resources, tradition, and fan base are greater.

A big part of that is transfers as well. It’s tough to get a ton of guys in the league when you have guys moving on to other programs.

Name still in portal. He is probably never playing for Tennessee again

No one really knows, however neither are listed on the spring roster.

Henry T does not want to be at UT. By all indications, if he and Crouch can play immediately elsewhere, they will. Coaches are leaving the door open. At this point, it's hard to believe either player would be all-in at UT. I can't remember this strategy ever working out for UT. Dooley and Butch both tried it with poor results.

Don't see Shamburger on the Spring Roster either?

If I'm the coach, I tell these boys to find another place to go and I strip their scholarship. Heupel is trying to get a team bond going and courting these guys is a contradiction to that message. You can come now and buy in or you can leave.

Oh well, screw them both then. Let them sit there until maybe they get eligible by august and miss an entire spring practice with any team they want to play for. Good luck scratching the starting line up at bama with a roster full of 5 star lbs.

Coach Heupel needs to make a firm statement here....show both the door immediately.
