Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Biggest problem I saw yesterday was no inside game. Maybe the freshmen have figured out there is no alpha dog on the team and they are trying to carry the team themselves. Seems like they aren't spreading the ball around like earlier in the season.

I tend to agree with Tennessee Champions. Ask any of the following schools that Barnes has coached at if they would hire him back: George Mason University, Providence, Clemson and Texas. Should have let him go to UCLA with no buyout required.

Did you ask them?

BTW, none of those schools have experienced the same level of success without him as they did with him

That dead horse should be plenty tender by now.
Until Barnes proves otherwise, get used to it. Barnes’ practice of bashing players has not gone unnoticed and is become a media topic. His failure with a team that was picked to win the conference is too big to ignore. Covid? Every team in the country has had to deal with the same pandemic.
You can get all bent about it, but it isn’t going to change until he beats Pearl.

So what is the excuse for Duke? UNC? Kansas? KY? THE downward spiral of UVA? Covid has impacted teams differently. I don’t think it’s an excuse for UT, however. This team lacks a post presence (both sides of the ball) along with inconsistent shooting.

Unless White could land some of these candidates then there’s no reason to push Barnes out.

Nate Oats (Bama)

Buzz Williams (Texas A&M)

Leonard Hamilton (Florida St)

Eric Musselman (Arkansas)

Greg McDermott (Creighton)

Dave Thorson (Drake)

It's 100% factually wrong to say all teams have been affected the same by covid

If this swoon continues (it will) time to start thinking about Barnes’ exit plan. Thank him for what he did for the program, but I could get behind an offensive minded, hungry, younger coach with success at a mid major program. We know exactly what we have with the staff we have now and at the end of the day Round of 32 exits don’t mean a whole lot.
If you lose Barnes this year you lose Kennedy Chandler who may be the best point guard to ever sign with UT.

But who am I kidding, these are the same fans who ran Fulmer off when he had Tajh Boyd AND Bryce Petty coming to UT. You fools never learn.

The only name on this list who might take the job is Thorson. I wouldn’t run off Barnes to hire him. Buzz Williams is overrated IMO. And the name Buzz brings back bad memories...

Leonard Hamilton? He’s 72 years old and was the convicted bag man at KY.

He’s a good coach who has Florida St playing tough basketball.

His age is a concern but we could probably get 3-4 years out of him. Maybe.

Or you could hire John Beilein who is younger, available and a better coach.

He’s not that much younger. He’s 68.

I wouldn’t trade Barnes for a coach older than Barnes

And Beilein would probably turn it down anyway. The only reason Shaka Smart hasn’t been fired from Texas is because Beilein said no to them.

I would trade Barnes for Beilein in a millisecond. Hell I’d go pick Beilein myself and drive him down. Beilein is only like 15 months older.

Why wouldn’t Beilein take the job unless he is done coaching, which he hasn’t said that he is
I think he is done coaching. He won’t get another NBA job after flopping in Cleveland and the fact he was willing to leave behind practically infinite job security at Michigan for a lower tier NBA job tells me he doesn’t want to recruit anymore.

Maybe. We will see. He loves loves loves basketball though. He’s a lifer. I just don’t seem him being done.

Probably will see very soon because Indiana will likely be open this offseason and I’m sure he’ll be on their short list. If he won’t take that job I would consider that a sign that he is done coaching college

I wouldn't take any of those guys over Barnes. When Barnes retires, I would be happy with a couple of them.
