Anyone want to give their ranking of all the Def staff and Off staff hires? Would be interested to hear from anyone that has been able to follow closely.
All I have is - my defensive #1 would be Garner. Offensive #1 Halzle/Golesh. Mostly just a guess on offense though.
Overall, considering the circumstances I’d give it a B+ overall.
Offensive: Grade A: Best thing he could do offensively was bring in his current staff. They already know the process and offensive system. This should cut the learning curve and limit staff turnover. The only concern should be their ability to recruit at the level this job requires.
Golesh, Elarbee, and Halze fit that criteria.
I’d give an A grade to
Kodi Burns. SEC Player, SEC Coach, SEC Recruiter. He was co OC at AU. You don’t give that title to someone unless you are scared of losing him, and need to pay him to stay.
Jerry Mack I’d give a A. TN Native. Long time coach. Polished. Been an OC and a Head Coach. Should be able to recruit instate. Which honestly, recruiting is what you want from a RB Coach.
Defensive: Grade B: This should of been harder roles to hire. These type of offenses are not kind to defenses.
Tim Banks I’d give a C. Was a P5 DC then fell down a notch to Co-DC / Position Coach. He has experience. Should be a solid recruiter. And he fits the aggressive, turn the ball over style Heupel wants. He gets the knock because he is far from a proven commodity.
Rodney Garner is an A+ hire. You couldn’t ask for a more proven DL Coach and recruiter. No brainer hire.
Willie Martinez is a B hire. He is a known commodity. Coached and recruited in the SEC. His defenses turn the ball over, and he coached with Heupel at OU and UCF. There is obviously comfortability their.
Brian Jean-Mary is a B+ hire. Obviously loyal to Charlie Strong, spent ten years with him. Known for his turnover defenses (get the theme). Coached at major programs such as Michigan and Texas. Was a pretty successful DC at USF.
Hiring
Scott Altizer, Brandon Lawson , Jake Breske, Charlie High, and Trey Johnson are A+ hires. And will do a lot more for this program than they will get credit for. Go read their bios. Hint* very much a TN recruiting flavor. Heupel is not lying about prioritizing instate recruits.
Overall, he set an identity. Offense is fast paced and aggressive. Defense is looking for turnovers. And recruiting is TN focused.
Tim Banks is the only hire I’m questionable on. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
