That's where I'm at. I've been hoping for Gillespie since before any names were mentioned but if it ends up baker, which there's no real evidence he's been contacted, then it's probably not as bad as people are acting. Pretty sure before that unc game they were 8-1 and the defense was giving up less than 20 points per game.

Yup and now everyone wants him as DC. Just goes to show that one game or even one season doesn’t make or break you as coach. I prefer Washington over Baker but if it’s Baker I’m not gonna be upset. Can always do better but at the end of the day we need someone who fits with the staff already in place.

I looked up Baker and people were freaking out about possibly losing him the season before.... he was considered the next it dc and had a top 25 defense in all major categories.... it fell apart during the covid year and he also had his best player opt out

I mean that just overreacts in the other direction. It's not as important as some are saying but it's probably more important than that.

Because with this offense the defense is destined to “fail” on paper. The only stat that should matter is W/Ls with a DC but as evidenced by how we view baler that isn’t reality

I also feel like once we figure out what the NCAA is going to do (if anything) that'll clear a lotta the road blocks that exist for hiring here. Sure it'd be great for Heupel to nail the staff first try, but if he gets us back to 7-9 wins and needs to upgrade or overhaul his defensive staff and any sort of NCAA punishment has already been handed down or is over he'll have less trouble hiring the new guy.

Can’t wait till people scream about lack of minority coordinators and HC yet we offer a minority a chance to both and they turn us down. So they can feel free to exclude TN from that statistic as we tried and we offer to pay them handsomely

All the credit should go to Mike Gundy. He was the original innovator that paved the path forward on how to play a desperate TN for multiple raises and contract stipulations.

UT should learn to never go Full Gundy. They haven't - still doing it.

I kind of understand what you are saying, but I think metrics for this D being successful will be holding people to field goals in the redzone and turnovers. The other team will get a lot of offenses possessions and will get yards. We still need to keep the other team out of the endzone.

I’ll try to further my point. Barry Odom is spoken of very highly here but if he wasn’t a former HC no one would be impressed with his defense this year. They gave up 35 pts a game but much of that awful number was based Off the high up tempo briles was running.

And that’s that part that is back ass backwards with this

Last year when he was a “good DC” they went 6-7

this year when he “fell apart” they went 7-2


That’s some seriously wrong metrics there
