This is on the kid and his coach. If there are questions as to whether he'll qualify at this point, then he didn't hold up his end of the deal in the classroom. If he signs and doesn't qualify, that's a scholarship just lost. We can't afford that when we may be hit with NCAA penalties. As far as doing it the day before signing day, the new Coach was just hired and doesn't even have a staff in place yet. All the previous recruiting administration was fired. It only looks bad to the uninformed.

If he is ineligible then he can't receive a scholarship. Part of any scholarship offer is that you have the necessary academics to receive a scholarship. He can go to Junior College if he can't qualify don't know what the complaint would be about from him has to be accepted in school he is not coming just to play football. Up to him to meet all the necessary qualifications so if this is all true pulling the scholarship is a no brainer and since Heupel has only been on the job a few days sure he got to it as fast as he could.

This topic just got teed up on 104.5 the Zone in Nashville. Ramon Foster went off on the high school coach. Nothing you haven't already read in this thread (it's a business these days ... new college coach, new priorities ... pruitt was having doubts about the lad, too ... gotta have your academics right, or get passed over ... HS coach is in his 4th job in 10 years ... HS coach making this more about him than the player ... etc).

This story will be gone and forgotten within a week. The lad will either get his academics right and find a school to play at, or he won't. His destiny is in his own hands. Meanwhile, the new Vols coaching staff will find players that fit their priorities and expectations. And that HS coach will probably be moved on to some other job within a year or three, based on his past.

Non-issue.

Hate it for the kid, but....
1. If he's not eligible then why waste the time.
2. If he doesn't fit the system why waste the time.
3. With the potential for reduced scholarships then we need to make every one of them count whether that's high school kids coming in or transfer portals. We don't have time to deal with....see 1 & 2.

Go Vols!!

It’s unfortunate this happened but college football is a business. Tough decisions have to be made.

Would you rather take a kid who won’t be eligible for grades possibly or maybe doesn’t fit our needs vs filling a void like a linebacker or lineman?

The coach is his handler and nothing more. If he cared about the kid he’d **** his mouth and help the kid land somewhere.

A three star won’t be on top of anyone’s list this late but he will have an opportunity to play ball for a free education somewhere if his grades are on par.

Sounds like the kid had eligibility issues. UT was afraid he would be eligible if signed the coach wouldn’t confirm if he was currently eligible or not. His High School coach said he was on his way/on track to being eligible. So I took that as he not currently eligible but will be later down the road according to the coach. And it appears UT accessed it and determine the risk wasn’t worth the reward of signing him. Guess he should have signed in December or had better grades.

This is why there is an early signing period.

Everyone gets to see if each party is genuine.

If the school doesn’t let you sign early, a kid needs to ask themselves why and make sure they have somewhere to land that truly wants them.

And if the kid doesn’t sign early, the school is fully justified in not being confident in the kids commitment and doing what they need to do.

If the school is committed and the kid is committed, they need to be signing on the early signing day. Otherwise, you’re rolling the dice

Yep. This coach down in Alabama should be pointing fingers at himself, his school, and especially his player rather than a new coach who is trying to restore order without much in the way of a support staff.

Saying he's going to get his eligibility issues in order doesn't cut center with a coach who needs as many usable assets on his roster as he can find.

The main responsibility rests ultimately with the player to get his academics sorted out as quickly as possible. If you are still iffy in February the same as you were in December, then your situation is going to be on the rocky side with a coach who didn't recruit you now in charge of things.

Why was it horrible if the previous staff wasn't going to sign him related to grade issues?

The issue with all this is based off a HS coach not presenting all the info and people drawing conclusions based off that. If the full story was told by the HS coach.. Optics would be different in my opinion.

No need to spin. Heupel didn't recruit him and doesn't have a need to hold a scholarship out for a kid who right now is not in a position to compete next year.
