Steele may not happen. Not good if true.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we get Barry Odom. If he were to snag Odom and then go and get Lebby that would be a pretty good SEC start.

I have been pretty positive about this hire. But if this is true then it will change things for me significantly. Steele is a very good and well respected DC who can recruit and develop. He has great ties to the South. This could hurt big time.

Steele? I wouldn’t hang my hopes on him period. He’s a journeyman and he’s had as many mediocre defenses as he’s had good ones.

Why don't you deal with the fact I've been right about the last 3 hires?

Why don't you deal with the fact that no one knows how this one will play out? I didn't hire Heupel and he may be worse than Pruitt but give the guy a fair chance at least. There's nothing you, I or anyone else on here can do about the fact that he's the coach for the next few years so we can at least give him a chance until he proves he can't get it done.

I don't have to do anything...that's the beauty. I can just fade into the background and in 3 years at the next coaching search come back out.

I remember talks of bridge jumping if he did come. Remind me when we switched?

That's exactly what you should do then except for the coming back part, you sure as hell won't be missed.

Coach worshippers will defend him to the death no matter what...until he's fired, then...they never liked the hire.

Most people aren't worshipping Heupel just accepting the fact he's coach and willing to give him at least a fair shake. Then you have you and your ilk that are upset you weren't consulted about who you wanted as coach and now you spend every waking minute b******* and bashing because that's all you can do.

I'd bring in my own guys too, he had Randy Shannon at UCF which is a pretty good option, a staff that has worked with each other and is on the same page will always work out better and we need everything to go our way to have any chance at mediocrity.

Man a lot of people here jumping to some pretty murderous conclusions. Auburn fired Malzahn, which they’ve been wanting to for a while now, and because a group of boosters wanted Steele to take over he’s a snake and backstabber? If I was put in the same position I would gladly accept the job. We will see how this plays out - Low is just speaking off what he thinks he knows. Heupel might be able to talk Steele into staying on, which I think would be ideal.

The problem with this offense is you put major pressure on the defense because they are on the field to much. If it’s not Steele he better get someone with SEC defensive experience or it’s going to be a long year.

And the problem with last year's offense is it didn't score points, kept putting the defense on the field and giving points away.
I am excited to see an exciting offensive minded HC

JH doing what he wants on defense results in almost giving up 500ypg.

Yikes.

This would be like if Dooley went with BamBam right out of the gates instead of having Justin Wilcox delay the inevitable for 2 years.

Heupel's defense ranked 123rd in the country last season.

If not Steele, then Heupel should take a close look in his old conference and see if Joe Gillespie of Tulsa or Brian Newberry of Navy would be interested in serving as DC on his staff. Gillespie is a disciple of Bill Young and he has picked up where Young left off at Tulsa and built a good defense there. That is like an Erk Russell bunch there with the gang-tackling and the physical approach they put into the game. The tie with Young, who was a pretty good tactician against the passing game and a good hand at getting more effort out of less talent, intrigues me in an age where the passing game is preeminent and we're down a bit on that side of the ball.

Newberry was at Kennesaw State when Ken Niumatalolo made a call to Bill Belichick trying to get advice in addressing defensive deficiencies in his program. Belichick, whose father was a long-time football staffer at Navy, gave him a set of principles he thought would be useful at Navy. Newberry's philosophy fit into the sort of defensive approach Belichick and others advised Navy to take.

The results have been good...

Army-Navy: Defense leading Midshipmen college football resurgence

I've watched Navy play several times this year. After a tough matchup with BYU, one where Navy had to play without contact practices in the days leading up to the game, Newberry got improvement out them every week. He's somebody who can come in and do a job with our defense...if we could get him (He's turned down offers from P5 programs to stay at Navy.).

These are two good tactical coaches who double down as strong teachers of the game. They would be a good fit in this situation.

We'll after the last 12 years of incompetence, back stabbing and not caring about the hard working people who spend their hard earned money to come to sporting events , buy gifts, buy food, buy drinks. Its time for UT to wake the hell up and start running this place like a real business. If expectations here are citrus bowl then whatever just everybody get on the same page . Best thing this University did was kick Fulmer the hell out of here. His history of back stabbing has finally ended. He is the cause of this decline, instead of taking his being let go like a man. No respect for that guy whatsoever.

Steele tried to pull a coup on Malzahn. Did he learn that from Fulmer? Why would you keep him at this point? Sure he could be serviceable as a DC short term, but how long would he last? ....And if Heupel is dumb enough to bring Randy Shannon, WE ARE SCREWED!
Hard to believe he could put out a worse defense. Our defensive fundamentals have sucked for a decade....or more.

So we’re going to pay Steele $900k to be here a month or so in the off-season?
