Look, at worst, we just need Heupel not to be a disaster. Just be okay. Just guide us through the difficulty we're facing, get the roster in decent shape, and just don't have disaster seasons like 4-8, 5-7 or garbage like that. Win 8 games a year for 5 years and we'll be in way better shape than we are now and maybe we attract a better coach if we decide to make a move then. At the very least, just don't be a disaster. I don't think he will be. He may be very good. At worst, he might be that bridge hire that we need.
I see what your saying but we have to hope for better than that. This coach needs to get us back to competing and winning SEC championships..this bridge coach idea just won’t work for us.

So I’ve decompressed and did a little digging. I really like the offensive numbers he put up. Looking at his losses he only had 1 double digit loss in 3 years. Pruitt had 5 double digit losses in a row this year alone. It’s obvious his offense works. The key will be who he can get to coach the defense. If he can get Steele to stay and not be a distraction then I think we can compete. I don’t expect championships but just be competitive. At this point that would be an improvement over what we’ve had. Get some good recruiters in here, put a good product on the field and let’s see how it looks.

Jones didn't work out, but he definitely had a better resume than Heupel. Phillip Fulmer also only took over on an interim basis for Majors, so that's not comparable
Had a better resume? He was never a coordinator. He didn’t know offense. He copied off of Mike B’s paperwork. Butch was a used car salesman. We got duped with that hire

Jones had won a conference championship at two other programs in two different conferences before coming to UT. Heupel has been a HC for all of 3 years and just went 6-4.

Butch wasn't a specialist on either side of the ball. Heupel also followed a guy who built up a program, but at least he's highly regarded as an OC/playcaller/QB developer.

No one worth a damn wanted to work for Fulmer...... That's the part of the equation that many of you are missing. Fulmer was a legend here, but the qualities that prevented him from righting the ship as head coach were the same issues that prevented him from hiring a competent coach. He was toxic, he had to go. Now we can begin to move forward, it's going to take time, at best this guy turns out to be a solid hire, at worst he's a bridge to a better coach in a more stable, less toxic program down the road.
I agree with you....maybe I should have included Fulmer when I said Pruitt should have been fired after A&M.

Can we go back to arguing about Franklin.... please?
Franklin was a wasted offer. He was never coming here. BS to make us think they were trying big and failing. But there were approachable big boys who were never approached. But be glad y’all for all that really matters is the Haslams are in charge and they have excised the last memories we have of winning.

That's why this hire was so important. I don't think this guy will move the needle for most people. Sure you have fans that will find the positives and completely ignore the negatives and justify what the AD does. I do tend to agree people are becoming wise to it. I have maintained for years that UT takes advantage of a very loyal fan base. We keep lapping up whatever they serve. I think the big TV money has diminished the value of the fan. They make a lot more money from the TV deals than on fan attendance on Saturdays. Its allways been a spreadsheet decision for them. How little do I have to invest to obtain the maximum amount of revenue. The goals of the UT administration do not align with what the fans want.

Absolutely, the TV money is a game-changer. It changes the entire revenue structure. If ticket sales decline, they'll simply go with a plan to downsize seating, provide upgraded options and make Neyland more of an entertainment venue. I've sat in some of these meetings and seen some of these plans. With Fulmer gone, I'd expect future plans to move even quicker in this direction. Follow the money.
