What's always been weird to me is that in coaching choices the NFL isn't the model to follow. They (the NFL) can get by hiring first time HC so much easier than you can at the college level. Largely because you have a GM & Owner involved with helping you hire/pick all personnel, they will at the end of the day have the ability to veto any choice you make (technically colleges can do, but it's far less common).

Also the talent gap between the Jets and the Chiefs isn't nearly as large as the talent gap between Alabama and -insert 99% of teams in college- so if you "hit" on the right HC you'll excel and even if you misfire you'll still be a potential 500 team anyway. Since the player talent is so close and any given Sunday things can happen.

Feel like in college you have to have a better grasp of being a head coach and your identity as one. Sure some schools have landed their guy from the assistant ranks, but ya see more failures (at least at their first stop) for first timers that take on a Power 5 job out the gate. At the group of 5 level you can be a great recruiter and just out talent teams, hell you can be a great Xs & Os guy and win too. That margin of error closes at the Power 5 level, especially in the SEC.

Long post short...college programs copying the NFL and hiring guys with no HC experience to Power 5 jobs are more likely to be in the market again in a few years.

You can be a pure football guy and succeed in the NFL. Not so in college. In fact, that's not really even that much of a perk. In the college game you have to be an elite recruiter and motivator with CEO-level instincts and decision-making abilities, with a little football knowledge on the side.

Marrone will win you over. I just know it.
The only way that happens is if he clearly turns it around and wins...big. I ain't falling for a horse💩 mediocre mirage again.

I have no problem eating crow, and no desire to be proven right, but I honestly see no hope at all in hiring the dude. All I see is bore recruiting, boring coaching and boring gameplans.

Blahrone?

It’s going to be Kevin Fn Steele. I’ll never waste money and more importantly time on this university again. I don’t care if he’s associate HC or whatever. That is a lazy ass tone deaf hire. Keep him far away from this university. Phil is just going to load up with his buddies just like he did at the end of his career and it’s going to fail miserably. I’m over Fulmer. Dude needs to hang it up and gtfo of town.

He's a weird guy. I've been trying to listen to his show the last few days and, let me tell you, it ain't an easy listen. Strange dude
He grows on you. Sure it’s annoying at times. But if he doesn’t bleed orange the same as we all do, he needs an Oscar for his acting job. And it’s that connection, the way that it seems like the joys and the pains hit him the exact same way they hit you and me...that’s the connection most folks have with him.

I still want to know who's responsible for our offense. VQ says that Pruitt doesn't micromanage Chaney. But when in his history has Chaney ran the ball 2 times, play action on 3rd and long, punt. That was our offense under Jim Chaney nearly every series.
Pruitt micromanages. Don’t let anyone say differently. You don’t go from pass happy Chaney to only running the ball Chaney....

The longer time goes on, the more I think being a brainy coach could even be a liability in college. It seems like a lot of tactically smart, detail-oriented coaches don't have the skillset to see the program from a 30,000 foot view and fall into micromanaging.

Two most important attributes for a college HC to have is be a good recruiter and a good manager of your coaching staff.

But someone like Doug Marrone can beat Pitt, 3 cupcakes, Vandy, USCe, and even Mizzou and UK on a consistent basis because we have just as much talent and he has the football acumen. May have trouble at the beginning with Bama, UGA, and UF. But, he needs a few good recruiters, and talent will catch up.

Can you imagine Kirby Smart coaching in the NFL?
