I think recruiting, like any sales job, is more feeling than anything substantial.

Lane Kiffin had done nothing here and landed Bryce Brown among others. Kirby Smart won 6 games at Georgia his first year but landed the #1 class in the country off of it. It's all salesmanship.
Yes, but remember when Lane was here we were also just a couple of years removed from an SECCG appearance. Kirby won 8 games his first year at Georgia and they were just a couple years removed from a double-digit win season and top 10 finish. Neither school was far removed from a period of success at that time.

Quite honestly, I think our coaches have done a hell of a sales job over the last few years to sign the classes we have. Our program has absolutely nothing to point to in terms of recent on-field success, recent player development, or recent relevancy of any kind. I don't know why any highly-touted prospect, especially guys at positions like QB or WR, would want to come here right now.

Tennessee's brand is very heavily damaged. Not damaged beyond repair, but heavily damaged.

I would give Chadwell 5 years to win the East, but he has to build to it. You can't be so hot and cold like Pruitt has been.

If our trajectory were something like, 5-7, 6-6, 8-4, 9-3, x, then I think we would all be happy with it.

The fact of the matter is Chadwell is "one of us" and Pruitt never had that benefit. As soon as the record went bad, we were always going to turn on the Bama guy.
We would turn on Chadwell too. We would turn on our own family if they were losing football games. It's what we do.

It's what fans do.......

It isn't program suicide. You need to calm down, McGill. I'm not wanting to hire Marrone, but the guy has experience. He isn't going to come here and be Pruitt. He knows how to coach. Again, he took Jax to the AFC title game. On top of that, it seems likely that Steel and Garner are on his staff. That's two SEC coaches with experience coaching and recruiting at a high level in this league. Marrone also coached under Payton, he knows what a good offense looks like. He probably brings in a top notch OC. Can he recruit? Not sure. We know Garner can. I think he's a safe hire. Does he win championships? Idk. Does he go 4-8? Not imo. I think he's a stabilizing hire that might bridge us to the next guy.

Again, I'm not sure I want him, but if our options are he and Chadwell, and that appears to be the case, he's the safer of the two. Might not have as high of a ceiling, but I guarantee you he has a higher floor. Chadwell might get up here and get eaten alive in this league. I'm not sure.

This all day.

Totally agree with you about the Tennessee brand being damaged. I guess I just think the school's "brand" doesn't matter so much when a new coach comes in and starts building some recruiting momentum. Maybe I am naive about it.

I’m not big on Marrone, but he might be just who we need. An older coach that won’t take BS and someone to stabilize this program. He could be the bridge we need.

I’m hoping anyway.

I don't have a lot of confidence in anyone that Fulmer would want. His track record of hiring coaches isn't the best.

It’s totally still possible to come here and build recruiting momentum at first, even with a damaged brand. Both Butch and Pruitt did it. Mack Brown has done it at UNC.

However, that momentum fizzles out quickly if it doesn’t start leading to obvious and consistent program improvement after a few years.

If you're a good coach it shouldn't take you 3 more years to get to 8 wins. There's talent over on the hill, they just haven't been coached up or developed. find someone proven to an extent instead of trajectory hires.

So, in short, no I wouldn't be happy only winning 5 next year with the easiest schedule we've had in forever.
