Agree with all this, I just want to know what you think the end goal should be in five years? Five years to bowl eligibility? Five years to 9 wins? Five years to SEC championship appearance?

I have no doubt the next two years are going to be ugly - and I think that no matter who the coach is, whether it be Pruitt, Marrone, Chadwell, whomever.

By Year 3 we should be able to see if the guy we've selected has "it." It's an intangible thing. It doesn't mean I expect to be competing for the East in that timeframe.
In 5 years we need to have a roster good enough to win the East and at least some predictions to win it. 9 wins. Agree with your 3 year assessment.

It isn't program suicide. You need to calm down, McGill. I'm not wanting to hire Marrone, but the guy has experience. He isn't going to come here and be Pruitt. He knows how to coach. Again, he took Jax to the AFC title game. On top of that, it seems likely that Steel and Garner are on his staff. That's two SEC coaches with experience coaching and recruiting at a high level in this league. Marrone also coached under Payton, he knows what a good offense looks like. He probably brings in a top notch OC. Can he recruit? Not sure. We know Garner can. I think he's a safe hire. Does he win championships? Idk. Does he go 4-8? Not imo. I think he's a stabilizing hire that might bridge us to the next guy.

Again, I'm not sure I want him, but if our options are he and Chadwell, and that appears to be the case, he's the safer of the two. Might not have as high of a ceiling, but I guarantee you he has a higher floor. Chadwell might get up here and get eaten alive in this league. I'm not sure.
I could just as easy see that happening to Marrone too. It isn't like he's proven anything at the P5 level, and unlike some here I'm not impressed with his NFL record either.

I don't exactly know what everyone means by stable..

Pruitt could achieve stability at 8-4 if you give him enough time. There is zero doubt in my mind about that. He was one win away last season. Is that really what you guys want?
I think both Marrone and Chadwell are unknowns. Marrone, with the right staff, may win big here. I think its dumb to say that we know that he wouldn't. Chadwell is more exciting. But we don't want to hire someone who comes up here and just gets eaten alive and goes 3-7 and 4-8 in his first two years and we're right back here again.

Chadwell is more exciting and by August I'll be at 15-0, but it is more risky imo. I'm just not sure we can afford the risk.

Will Friend.....

IF Chadwell gets this job. He’ll get to pick his own staff, I’m sure there will be suggestions from Fulmer and whatnot, but nothing forcing a guy on him. Whether yOu LiKe It Or NoT.
You mean the Will Friend that has gotten two other SEC jobs in the last two weeks?

Yeah... If it wasn't for Pruitt he would probably be working the Arby's drive through 🙄.

That conversation with Phil or whoever is going to happen. But it won't happen after he's hired, that's an interview question. Chadwell will be asked who he's going to hire... And if it is a bunch of coastal Carolina coaches, Phil is going to tell him he has to hire a better staff or he won't have the job.

I'm sorry. That's just how that is going to happen. They aren't going to transplant a bottom tier group of five staff to Tennessee. That's all I'm saying. It isn't forcing a staff on the guy if he agrees he can't use the same staff he's had in the past here. And he would have to agree to get the job.

I would give Chadwell 5 years to win the East, but he has to build to it. You can't be so hot and cold like Pruitt has been.

If our trajectory were something like, 5-7, 6-6, 8-4, 9-3, x, then I think we would all be happy with it.

The fact of the matter is Chadwell is "one of us" and Pruitt never had that benefit. As soon as the record went bad, we were always going to turn on the Bama guy.

Lol, ok Mr. Definitive statement know it all.

Probably so. I admit I thought he and staff would develop a lot better.

I completely agree with this. I'm okay with the 5 year rebuild if we are seeing improvement or even stability. Say we're at 8-4 for 4 straight years or so, but we're competitive and we're just missing a couple of pieces. People are patient with that imo. But we can't be going 8-4, 4-8, 6-6, 5-7. We have to show that we are improving. We can't be dropping games to Georgia State and getting blown out every time we play a ranked team. I was on board with letting Pruitt rebuild, but he wasn't rebuilding

Chadwell should get to pick his own staff and if that means bringing Staggs as he DC, then so be it. I wouldn’t want a job where the AD forced a guy onto my staff.
It never works out. A HC needs to trust his staff, and when coaches are forced to hire then there’s no trust. Butch is a great example.

Ansley has been looking for a way out. Pruitt wants to hire another defensive coach. So there's a path to make a hire with several scenarios for how it plays out. A lot of people would like to see Steele back at UT, and the role could be fluid.
Oh God steele is going to be head coach in waiting after he's DC a year for Pruitt. You can see it coming.
