I've never mentioned a mid major coach. For that matter I havent mentioned getting any coach.
Its about Ws and Ls. His offense ranking is an irrelevant number.

Herman is on the hot seat at Texas 4 years in while recruiting extremely well. Why? Some of that is due to be 1-4 against OU. But moreso because he's losing to teams he shouldn't be losing to.
His results at Texas would be a lot tougher to get at UT.
Texas hasn't bolstered his stock after Houston. It was higher before he took the job.

Fair points and fair argument that he has underachieved. He was 6-3 in year 4/covid. He's probably 9-3/10-2 on a regular schedule there this year. Not dominate but very good. Much better than what we're currently getting.

Yes, he is on the hot seat for the reasons you have outlined. Is that because he is a bad coach? Does politics play in it at all? We don't know.

I do know this though. There is not a guaranteed elite coach out there. No former good coach like a Saban, Meyer, or Spurrier we can go get.. There isn't a clear cut high potential coach in the lower ranks imo and even if there were are they elite or going to fall flat on their face too? We don't know. TN has fallen flat on its' face 3x's in a row now hiring coaches that can't even get TN to a solid foundation and consistent winning seasons. Got guys going 4-8 and 3-7 man. We can't do that again. We've lost a generation of TN fans almost now. The diehards are becoming apathetic. We need to find some semblance of on field success.

We all want the same thing; to be great again. We are Vol brethren and united in that goal. However, it is my opinion the program can't afford another absolute failure. I would personally rather hire a coach with a higher floor than a hot coordinator or lower ranks HC. So when I objectively look at the available options of an established HC who has had some success we could potentially get, I see a guy in Herman that was wildly successful in the lower ranks as a HC. Has worked under great offensive minds like Meyer. Has consistently put out great offenses everywhere he has been. Is young with room to grow as a HC. Sure, he has not met the expectations of Texas. But if his floor is 7-8 wins per year and, as a young and growing HC, has the potential to learn from his mistakes at Texas and become a 10-11 win coach I like that risk vs reward better than our other options. I dont want us to just ne competitive, I want wins too, but we have to become competitive first and I think he could do at least that based on his track record.

Gus is a better coach than Pruitt too. He wouldn't be my first choice but we could do a lot worse. Maybe the firing humbled him and he's ready to make some changes on his offense? If so, get him a great DC and let's go because his floor is higher than most of the other options as well and that is what we need most, the highest floor coach we can find.

Its easier to guage what Gus might do here than Herman.
UT is more comparable to AU than Texas.

And I'm not advocating for Gus

This is the mentality that prevents Tennessee from making good hires.

He's at Iowa State. Iowa State has played Oklahoma 85 times. They have beaten Oklahoma a total of 7 times. They are 7-76-2 against Oklahoma.

Matt Campbell is 2-3 vs. Oklahoma while at Iowa State. One of those Oklahoma teams had the Heisman Trophy winner and went to the CFB Playoff. The other is currently ranked #14.

Iowa State hasn't had 4 winning seasons in a row since the 1920's. Calvin Coolidge was President. He has clinched that this season

Frankly, with his resume, he could do better.

The only coach with a good resume that would come here would either be a person who grew up a huge TN fan and wants to bring the program back or was a player and loves the school and wants to bring it back.

The third option is an ego maniac who just wants the glory of being the guy.

Outside of those three types, no qualified HC coach with options has us near the top of their list.

Herman also beat a no.6 ranked UGA team and trounced a respectable Mizzou team with a high octane offense. He's 3-0 against the SEC and 2-4 against Oklahoma (beat no.3 Oklahoma by 10pts while at Houston. An OU squad that went 11-2, won the Big 12, and beat Auburn badly in the Sugar bowl).

Also whipped no.3 L'Ville with Lamar Jackson by 26, no.9 Florida State by 14, a no.11 Utah by 28pts, and a no.6 Oklahoma state team among others.

I live in Texas, and a little birdie told me that a certain coach has some serious vices that essentially require babysitting. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but something I hope we would vet during any interview process.

I would be good with Campbell. I know that recruiting is important but having someone that can do more with less would benefit us a lot.

Campbell recruits well for where he’s at. I would suspect he would recruit better at a more recognizable program.

Dooley and Butch both signed top 10 classes. TN recruits itself as-is. A winning TN can recruit with any program in the country. More with less is the guy we need right now, everything else will take care of itself

If they pull the string on Pruitt, Campbell should be the first call.

Offer him 6 and plenty for staff.

This. And if he says no to $6M offer him 7 with 4-5 for a staff. What we've been paying already, might as well get a proven winner with that money

IT would be real nice if Fulmer would call this man and see if he would be interested in taking the UT job after this year..he would be a hell of a hire bar none....still young...Iowa state wins the Big 12 if they beat WV to.

You think he is going to recruit far superior to our current guy? Is he the guy that is going to beat FL, GA, and BAMA? Possible. But evidently the big money guys don't see him worth shelling out 20 mil to make a change RIGHT NOW. Better may not necessarily project to be better enough. You never know, our guys may have talked to his guys and found out we are third on his list of spots to consider. Way too many moving parts. Heck what if we had canned JP last week planning on hiring SARK, OOPS That is how you end up with Dooleys. , NOBODY likes 3-7. CPF may have learned from his predecessors what NOT to do. Too much Ready Fire Aim in our past.

Tennessee should not do anything with Pruitt until it has the replacement in the bag. That has been the biggest problem in the past.

Fire Pruitt and immediately leak the “potential “ replacement to the press. Just like Texas did today.

Lol, our current guy is recruiting to the level of Dooley, and coaching to that level as well.

Iowa State is a average team in a bad conference, so this guy is going to come here and win in the SEC
It seems that so many fans here think nobody but Freeze is good enough for Tn. Hate to break the news, but UT is not an elite choice anymore, so quit thinking we are entitled to an elite coach. Time to put away the egos.

Totally agree. Maybe that’s the reason for the silence out of the AD lately and we haven’t hired anyone to replace departing assistants.

It likely is an excellent sign if true...and I have little faith that it is.
