Decided to wait and mull over what I saw yesterday in both games with future Vol coaches. Give it time to allow the excitement to wind down.
Freeze with Mason or equivalent at DC would win a natty. No question in my mind. This quote from a Forbes article this time last year tells me how he matured as a person:
“Incredible, accepted, appreciated, humbled,” said Freeze, when asked to describe what the year since his December 2018 hiring has meant to him. “You go through things in life like I have with your family and friends and you kind of get to a point where some things that mattered before don’t really matter anymore. Some people that mattered before really don’t matter anymore, and what they may say and what they may think of you.” Phil may be in that later group of people. Will see. But it is obvious to the entire sports world he would kill it at UT and would love to be here. He could leave Liberty with a clear conscience that he was leaving them in a great spot for their future having taken them to a place they had never been.
Napier and Chadwick would be a step by step process with unknown potential at this point. Both know enough as HC's and offensive guys to adapt schemes - the x's and o's with the jimmies and joes they could recruit. I see them as equal now. At first I thought Chadwell's O was too gimmicky and QB run centric to translate. After watching more closely this time I think he is simply doing what is necessary for them to win with the talent they had. That O can be adapted, which is what winners do. The fighting chads displayed the attributes of their head coach. Impressed. Napier had to fight with the attitudes of his team who obviously felt they could just show up and beat UTSA. He got it done even though his players were undisciplined and lacked focus at times. His O can go RPO or multiple with pro set depending on personnel groupings. That's also what winners do. Both are solid on game day and make adjustments as necessary. Their players totally respect and like their HC's.
All three make Jeremy look like a middle school coach IMO. All three would be thrilled to take the job here IMO. I hope Randy Boyd is paying attention and is willing to fix UT football now - this week.
