There are degrees of variation.

Gus doesn't win enough games, and Pruitt doesn't win enough games, but Gus wins way more than Pruitt.

I'm just confused by how a guy who averages 8.5 wins in the SEC West can't come to the East and do as well if not better. He already has to face Georgia and Alabama every year at Auburn so he knows 2 of our toughest 3 opponents well, has even beaten Saban more than ANY OTHER NAME mentioned in our coaching list. Has won in the SEC, has won the SEC, has played in 2 national title games now...

He's been a great DC at Auburn, and honestly is the only reason Gus wasn't fired about 2-3 years ago.

In a lot of people's minds, Steele never has been able to shake that 70-spot he gave up to West Virginia in the Orange Bowl when he was Dabo's DC at Clemson.
Reminds me too much of Chief, who I loved at UT, but like Fulmer, wasn't big on evolving with the game. But hey, I could be wrong.

Yep. The big ten thought they could use her and her ilk to cancel all of cfb. Back fired on them big time. And now the big ten is changing their rules so Ohio st can get the playoffs. You can make it up!
I have no problem with them “changing their rules” in a season where everybody has had to roll with the flow. Never a fan of bureaucracy anyway. Also not a Buckeye fan, but them flouting the conference overlords in the first place and now having them kowtow to their big dog has a sense of justice to it.

Not a single one of those guys did anything of note before or after Gus in college. Cam won a heisman under him, and Jarrett played for a SEC title and got drafted. Bo has a few years left.

Also Marshall was never a 5 star QB, he left HS as a 4 star CB and left juco as a 3 star QB.
My mistake on Marshall

In talking to some people yesterday, it doesn't seem as if Auburn fired Gus with a clear plan of who they were going to hire, which seems crazy to me with signing day in 48 hours. I assume they will go heavy in the transfer portal for this class.
Steele has some strong relationships with some key Auburn people. I believe he will interview and will be a candidate but I really can't see him being the front runner unless Auburn financially is not paying a lot. We will see.

Hell I'm on the Gus bus just because in his tenure at Auburn as OC/HC he's got 1 Heisman winner and had a total of 3 guys finish in the top 10 in Heisman voting. Produced over 40 NFL draft picks as well.

Even if he DOESN'T win the East in his first 5 years, I'd take 8-10 wins and it coming down to 1 game whether or not we go to Atlanta.

Just so everyone is clear.

Gus did not win a National Championship as Auburn head coach. He did so as an OC with Cam Newton.

He has a National Championship game appearance, which he lost to Florida State.

While both of these plays absolutely count, because they happened, let us not forget this season was when the famous "Pick Six" kick return vs Alabama and the "Prayer at Jordan-Hare" tipped TD pass against UGA happened. Both are considered in football, "miraculous" and statistically, this season was insanely closer to being a 3 loss Auburn team than a team that played for the NC.

Just so we have that clear.
Pruitt shut their ass down in the second half.

Sorry for ranting about this but she needs to shut her damn mouth, those bastards up there were arrogant enough to cancel their season and tell everyone else how to feel. When that didn't happen and everyone told them to shove it up their ass they sure didn't want to miss out on potential playoff money. So screw her and screw the big ten........ Rant over, for now

I actually think this has a lot to do with the reluctance to make a coaching change. To the average fan, and I am one, a change must happen yesterday. However, as a person trying to manage a workplace, how do you ask everyone to take a pay cut, then turn around and pay millions to buy out a guy you just extended within the last year? That could really destroy the morale of the people you have to face every day.

I still think a change needs to be made ASAP for the overall, long-term health of the football program, but it does put the AD in a tough spot when you look at it from other angles.

If Tennessee was going 8-4, 9-3 every year and we were talking about Gus getting us over the hump, then I'd be strongly opposed to his potential hire here. Given that we're absolute garbage though, I bet he would improve us.

I think any strong opposition to his hiring is caused by the knowledge that he was just canned by his former school for "not winning enough," and therefore people have concluded they don't want him. But like I was saying there are degrees of variation to that. Mark Richt didn't win enough, Gus didn't win enough, Derek Dooley didn't win enough. But within that group some won more than others.
