UT was always just a chance for Pruitt to prove that he could be the HC at Alabama after Saban.

That dream is dead, and the only thing Pruitt has left to coach for is the paycheck, and that is obviously not enough motivation for him.

It truly is laughable at this point that some people worried Pruitt would be so successful here he would jump back to Alabama whenever Saban retired.

These guys advocating keeping JP aren't doing him any favors. If I was in a position to influence the football caretakers, I would approach JP with the LSU, Les Miles scenario. Negotiate a buyout less than what UT owes. I think JP would take it.
Yeah, 7-9 million will buy half of sand mountain

Sorry, I thought you were being serious..
I'm being serious about the leverage. Being forced into an untenable situation like that is a bigger stick than you'd believe (especially when you know people are actively trying to fire you for cause). The carrot is negotiable.

I think it was ultimately Pruitt's goal to do so, but the reality of his lack of HC ability was apparent in year 1 when he couldn't motivate the team, started the revolving door of assistant hires.

Everything is negotiable as they say, but not for $2M total...

Oh no doubt.

If Pruitt had managed to string together some 8 to 10 win seasons here, he would have been on the short list whenever Saban does leave.

As it stands, there is nothing to suggest he can even consistently beat Vanderbilt or Kentucky.

Again, that figure is filler. I could've said cornbread, or asparagus. That wasn't part of the question I thought I was answering for you.

He may not get a shot as a HC again, but he will work as a DC. He will not damage his brand so much that he won't be able to do that. Most likely he'll go right back to bama..

IMO, he would be stupid to negotiate down from what his contract states..

I won't be surprised to see Ainsley go back to the NFL as a position coach, Chaney will just ride it out till retirement, and the rest of the staff is basically unemployable after the player regression over the last 3 seasons.
The others will find jobs somewhere for recruiting purposes or, head coaches will view Pruitt as the cause of the regression.

Serious question... What leverage would UT use to negotiate a sum lower than what Pruitt's legally binding contract states he will get?
I don't think there is legal leverage. However, JP has always been at very successful programs where winning was the norm. He's a rockstar DC but appears to be a failed HC. What I see is a guy who has quit and isn't enjoying what he is doing. Lots of ways to frame a reduced buyout, even using the one before the extension, to save face. I could be completely wrong, but I think JP would accept a reduced buyout, to get back to what he is very good at, if presented in the "right way", to borrow an expression.

Well, UT could say something like "we want you gone but we're not going to fire you. We can't. So you get to stay on national television making a fool of yourself until you quit or make an error so egregious that we get to fire you for cause. Either way you've damaged your brand irreparably. Or, you can walk away for 2 million dollars today and we will all be happier"

If you had a wife and 3 kids that you were responsible for providing for would you do that? You’re scenario involves giving up 10 million dollars. As a father, I would respect the man even less if he did that.

I took a look @ the schedule for the next four yrs as my son will plans to enroll fall 2021.
FL, UGA and Bama are automatic losses. They are only getting better w good coaching and great recruiting.
The you take a look at the west opponents down the road: Ole Miss, A&M, LSU & Ms State.
Out of conference- Pitt, @BYU, Army & Oklahoma.
We will most likely have another coaching change but the outlook is bleak rt now. I don’t see us competing foe the East for yrs to come. I hope I’m wrong!

You may be right.

Pruitt and his family may have no trouble living in Knoxville as persona non grata for 3 years. I'm sure his wife and kids will love the harassment, the moving signs/vans, the taunts from other kids at school, or whatever crap failing coaches have to deal with in college football towns. Pruitt may have no trouble seeing himself lambasted and humiliated on TV and local radio. Pruitt may sleep like a baby and not care about any of it and just collect his paycheck for three years until he goes back home. That all could very well be the case and then you don't have that leverage to mercifully pull the plug on something that clearly isn't working for either party.

But, that seems a little far fetched to me. Family. Furure. Pride. Ego. Those are all buttons to push for the type of people who are coaches at that level.

He won't be here three more years unless he performs a miracle. In which case he's a hero in Knoxville...
