There are more coaches than Freeze out there. If Fulmer hates him as mentioned, not likely to be the guy. I want Texas to fire Herman. It would be interesting for sure. He will have a job in a few days after.

Hope it’s us

Recently Texas fired a coach and even Bama Dave had him hired within days and the rest is glorious UT basketball history.

So let's hire Herman if they move on from him. He can hire the best DC available and go win some games. At least he runs an O that is in this century.

Why wait for Herman to get fired? He may want out because it's inevitable/toxic/any other reason. Would look better for him to jump rather than land after being fired

Who do you like then that is reasonable? Every coach I have named has shown they can win as a head coach. Herman would be the best coach we have had here since Fulmer. He would win 8-9 a year and beat one of the big three every year. He came very close to beating LSU last year when they were unreal. He would be a great hire.
I don't dislike any of the names that have been mentioned, including the prove it coaches like Chadwell and Napier. I'm just saying that those guys, however much this board might like them, are still prove it coaches, who many here have professed to not want this time. I'd also be OK with Herman; he'd be an upgrade over Pruitt, but I think the frustration he's given Texas fans is a foreshadowing of how he'd be perceived here, because I think Tennessee and Texas are actually pretty similar jobs. Arrogant Texas fans would probably bristle if I told them that, but I really think they are in terms of the byzantine, factional booster crowd and dysfunctional administration. But who knows; getting a cast-off coach from Texas worked for basketball...

The best name overall, despite his baggage, is still Freeze.

I wouldn't want Herman. He has also waisted talent down here, in the biggest university, with the weakest conference. We need a coach that can develop talent.
Hes been better than you think. Hes 30-18 with a 7,10,8 and equivalent to a 10 win season. Strong had Texas in a spot similar to TN and Herman has made themcompetitive again. Hes also beaten Kirby and UGA. Worst case scenario with Herman would probably be getting us back to a consistent 8-4 which wouldn't be a bad thing. Also hes had time at Texas to learn from mistakes and I bet at TN he wouldn't make the same one twice.

I think it’s worth asking if Texas high school football is over-rated.

We are about to have 7 double digits losses in a row.

7.

I'm sorry but no coach should survive that in year 3.

Yet, here we are with those in the know saying that the AD is saying Pruitt will survive that, and we should be good fans and continue paying our money because that is the Tennessee way and giving up is for quitters.

This is just a total ****show all the way around.

He had one good year. The year they beat GA. Since then he really hasn't done much, and if you compare the competition of SEC to Big12-11-10, it's not even close. He might be better than Pruitt, but it's not a huge step up. We were lucky with Brown. Their last AD wasn't very good and let go of a winning coach. The fans here are more than willing to send him packing, and there are is a lot of talk about Urban. They have the money to get the golden goose, so you may get your wish. I think it's table scraps though and we will still be unhappy. Maybe we beat Vandy again though!

Okay okay okay....

Bear with me and let’s assume Pruitt isn’t replaced.

What would your priorities to fix this team? What assistants would you move around? What seniors would you try and talk into staying? Etc...

For me, in no particular order:

  • I’d look to move on from Weinke. Ty Simpson recruitment be damned. I mean, it’s hard for me to be too critical of him because JG is a bag of ****, Bailey missed the entire offseason, and Mauer was suicidal so doubt he was focusing on his craft. But as bag a ****** as JG is, he’s regressed. Shrout never has improved, etc. I’d look at Tee Martin as the natural replacement. Him or Long.
  • Id move Osovet to something other than TE coach. We’ve gotten nothing from the position all year, and it was fairly damning when Jacob Warren, during his media availability, pointed out how the tight ends had to teach Joe about the position. That ain’t good. Joe is a creative offensive mind and seems like a talented recruiter. He has a position on the staff - but Im not 100% sure what it is yet.
  • Niedermeyer has a background in defense, and I hate to judge him too harshly, but I’m not sure he needs to be coaching ILB’s. HT has regressed this year and neither Banks nor Crouch have improved.
  • I’d tell Len’Neth Whitehead that yeah, I know you want to play RB, but his path to the field is at LB. There was a lot of talk during his recruitment that his best position was LB. With Gray, Dee, Smalls, Hodge, and the incoming freshman - we have a log jam at running back. Meanwhile, outside of HT- we have nothing proven at LB. Some players have flashed, like Joseph, but for my money, LB is our biggest question mark going forward.
  • I’d thank Brandon Kennedy and most of the seniors for their service. Maybe ask Fant, Solomon, and Palmer to come back.
  • I’d tell Cooper Mays to spend the entire offseason working at center. And I’d sell Cade on the idea of playing side by side with his brother if he’s willing to return.
  • Id do my best to bring Tosh or Bo Davis in as DL coach.
  • Id scour the earth for a transfer quarterback. Darriel Mack, formerly of UCF, would be someone I would look closely at. Dual threat QB with a few years eligibility left. Played well against LSU a few years back. I’d encourage every QB not named Harrison Bailey or Kaiden Salter to “look around” this offseason.
  • Previously expressed my concern about linebackers so like above, I’d make finding a transfer linebacker or two a priority. Especially if someone has an ounce of pass rushing ability.

That’s all I have off the top of my head.
Where’d you get the Jacob Warren quote? He taught EVERYTHING as a JUCO HC, so I doubt he’d never heard of the TE position as that implies.

If we got Herman, we might end up with Yurcich after all...

The question would be, do you bring Texas's defensive guys with you, or go get a guy like Muschamp to fill the role.

I have one younger relative who has only really experienced a couple of decent seasons, with the first part of 2016 being the “glory days” of his fandom. That’s sad.

Here’s the kicker though: one of his older cousins constantly tells him how sorry he is that he didn’t get to experience the magical time that was...the SEC East title in 2007.

We have to get back; for them, more than for us.
Fans meh’d that “magic” at the time...and would again.

If I were in JP’s shoes...I would probably look to the future. Shore up one of the best ‘22 classes the program has ever seen and make it extremely hard for the administration to get rid of me for fear of loosing such a talented group of players...
At that point, it'll fully be all his players. No more excuses. You've talent on campus including two good QB's.

You've had to learn on the fly. Learn how to delegate, when to hire and fire, and learned not to hire your buddies.

Year 4, its now fully his book that he wrote. That class must be a top 6 or 7 class. It absolutely has to be or it will be a failure in my mind.
