I don't know. I don't think the fans would be hyped about it. He's not really won enough to convince me he's going to provide the spark TN needs right now. Maybe if he won big at Syracuse or had been a successful coach in the SEC, I'd probably be a little more interested in him. I think most fans would be disappointed with Doug Marrone. He seems more like a NFL lifer. I mean, I got bored researching him last week.Did a good job at Syracuse back in the early 2010s. 2 8-5 seasons after years of being piss poor. Tons of NFL experience. I believe he could hire a great coaching staff similar to Herm Edwards at ASU. Plus he's not in the twilight of his career just yet. He's 56 years old. Also I would never even consider him a viable candidate if not for his previous relationship with Fulmer. I'm not saying he would be a home run but he would probably get Tennessee back to at least 8 and 9 win seasons. He would need to hire some recruiters though but that shouldn't be a problem. Every head coach post Fulmer has at least had respectable recruiting classes. UT still recruits itself. Just needs the right head man to put everything else into motion. Winning being priority #1.
Oh I agree. The excitement level around a Marrone hire wouldn't be very enthusiastic overall. I just think he would be a solid hire. Obviously I'm all in for Freeze but who knows if Fulmer would let by gones be by gones in order to win.I don't know. I don't think the fans would be hyped about it. There weren’t immediate results and Fulmer tried to fix it. That and the musical chairs act with QB’s (his second time and with the same losing result) doomed any possibilities. He wanted to embrace the new spread offense trend but wasn’t prepared to be patient. Kinda like moving from the 4-3 defense to the 3-4.Ya know...crazy thing is everyone recalls Fulmer's "fail" hiring of Clawson, but the dude has built a pretty good program at Wake Forest.
He probably just wasn't a great OC fit with a former OC HC who wants to run the show his way. But I can't fault Fulmer for trying to find the next hot name, he just wasn't willing to hand over the keys and it showed.
I think that’s pretty faulty analysis because it is based on what past hires? Dooley? Butch? Pruitt?
I mean, each one of those was a google search name. And if we crazed VolNation folks had to search, you can bet the garden variety fan had no idea who those were.
we just don’t have a sample size of hiring a big name “wow” factor coach to say that wouldn’t result in increased ticket sales.

Hiring DeBord adds at least 5 seasons to his tenure.Yeah expecting it to happen year 1 was crazy. Cut was able to give him those immediate results because he had the QB with the talent on roster in Ainge. Cut leaves (again) and then you bring in the new guy to run his system and hand him freaking Crompton, Stephens, & BJ Coleman... I mean those guys were all average at best, but didn't fit the Clawson style at all.
Thought in hiring Clawson as HC? I read somewhere (prob here) his system takes a few yrs to implement and that is why it didn't work out here. There weren’t immediate results and Fulmer tried to fix it. Lots of "what-ifs" with the Fulmer era, had he recruited Boyd at QB and switched to RPO/spread then he may still be the HC honestly moving into retirement.
For sure, this has to be one of the biggest "what ifs" in the history of Tennessee football. Who else was in that recruiting class? It was in top 5ish range, I believe.
You mean when he was the HC of the Raiders? That '09 class finished 8th, Lane still pulled some studs. Everything was honestly setup pretty well...I think they cut Fulmer free too soon, and I think Lane was too immature and early in his career to be hired as HC. Imagine if we had managed to pull Lane as the OC instead of Clawson and Lane coulda gotten a few years under Fulmer before just taking over the job?
I mean honestly if Lane had stayed in Knoxville things would also be pretty different right now.
