Matthews is a "Yes" man he will never disagree with the admin or program. He's only butt hurt at kiffin because he was actually taking the team somewhere then just up and left for USC. I quit listening to Matthews always sunny and no partly cloudy. Gray and the Oline were the only bright spots last night the D was for a while until they got wore out.
You are correct that we are not an SEC team. It is not like we played Alabama 5 straight weeks. We had Kentucky and Arkansas in that five game stretch. There simply is no reason to lose 5 straight games by double digits at any time.It would have happened several times over the last decade if we were playing an SEC only schedule. We are not currently an sec caliber team.
He thought he would be better on defense because it it’s harder to fumble when you aren’t carrying the ball. Did you forget he was doing a pretty good impersonation of Arian Foster nearly every time he carried the ball? The poster child for fumbleitus. You can thank Pruitt for that since he thought he would be better in defense. Again just another reason Pruitt doesn’t get it
Mathews is right. We looked pretty good in every area except Guaranterrible. I mean he reads worse than an illiterate, one eyed with hillbilly with cataracts.... he said "he feels pretty good coming out of the game. We're improving." Improving from what? Hey dumb dumb Doug- we're in year 3!!! We've lost 5 in a row!!! All by double digits! How is this acceptable to anyone?

It's pretty frustrating to see an o-line push around a decent defense in the second half just to see drives torpedoed by poor play from your QB that is largely ineffective in the second half of every game and poor playcalling that goes away from what's working. I think the team looked much more capable of winning than they did against Arkansas...and that's what is so frustrating. I think the talent is there but poor decisions by the coaches are killing the offense...including playing JG when he's obviously struggling.
Honestly what else can he say? The Vols lost a game because of a QB mistake. While Gitmo was far from great, he was (before the pick 6) playing well enough to win. Blocking looked significantly better, WR play was the best I’d seen this year, tackling in the second half was improved, the RBs were running great, the DBs only had 1 blown coverage, the play calling was fitting what the team can do.... he said "he feels pretty good coming out of the game. We're improving." Improving from what? Hey dumb dumb Doug- we're in year 3!!! We've lost 5 in a row!!! All by double digits! How is this acceptable to anyone?
Totally agree. The thing he has hung his hat on the past three years is that he didn't turn the ball over, and that ain't the case now. He has had some of the most devastatingly bad turnovers in UT history. On the other hand, HB looked pretty good.Outside of the blown coverage, I'd agree. If I'm anyone other than the QB coach, I see huge reasons for optimism. But QB play has been atrocious the past 5 games. Even the "good games" for JG have not been "good" except in that he didn't turn the ball over.
The most inefficient positions this year have been QB, TE, Inside LB, and Safety. We think we have talent at QB(HB). I am not sure we have talent at LB, and Safety. I am sure we do not have talent at TE. We appear to have talent at TE in the 2021 recruiting class, QB, Safety, LB and other positions. We do not know very much about the talent in our current Freshman class because of lost time due to COVID. I think we have very good talent there, but it is not yet proven. We simply can not yet evaluate the talent of the 2020 class and may not be able to evaluate the talent of either the 2020 or the 2021 classes until next Fall when, hopefully, COVID will be coming under control. Time for everyone to do some rational thinking before throwing the baby out with the bathwater.TE sure but the rest? Don’t confuse young with bad.
