Pruitt CAN be fired, buyout not a problem

I doubt that, it’s standard practice to offset, but then again, our administration is weak and lacks true organizational leadership.
You doubt it. Actual text of contract has been posted here several times. There is no offset. Its called a fact.

Revenue lost this year has hit most universities hard due to Covid and I am assuming UT is on that list, I just don’t see it happening this year...
There are a few people on VN here who cannot grasp the concept of the buyout. They start new threads every week.

That’s what’s got me so down.
-I knew CJP doesn’t know what he’s doing.
-It’s becoming obvious he’s not going to learn on the job
-The buyout will absolutely not be paid by my university for at least 2 more years.
-at that time my university will hire another terrible coach.

It all feels so hopeless.
And to add too it I’m beginning to believe the undeserved contract extension was an effort to protect CJP and give him more time in the event that this year or next wasn’t good.

Gaaawwwwwdddd help us.

If needed, a few fatcat boosters can quickly write a check to cover the buyout — money talks

Wanted to post this and see what everyone thinks. If he's fired, there will be an offset for his income from another job. No way he sits around without someone (likely Bama) picking him up as DC at 1 million per year or more. That would knock it down quite a bit.

He's had massive turnover on his staff already and lost S&C guy. It seems that he is hard to work with and everything you hear is that he is stubborn. Playing JG is clear evidence of that.

It's obvious to rational people that it's not going to work. I hope we go ahead and rip the band aid and get it over with.

His buyout is 60% of his remaining total compensation, paid out per year through January 2026. So let's do the math here. If he were fired after 2020, that would be his $4.2 million average salary x 5 years = $21 million. Now, he only gets 60% of that, so UT would owe him $12.6 million over five years. Good chance that he sits out for a year, So that's a $2.5 million check for year one. IF he takes a DC job after that for $1 million or so, that's only $4 million off of the bill, which may take some money off, but it's not "quite a bit."

BUT one more thing: Tennessee State law requires state agencies to set aside 100% of a contractual employee's owed buyout at the time of termination. So the UTAD has to come up with every penny of the $12.6 million within 30 days of termination and deposit it in the state fund that then distributes the payments. Any offset is returned later at the time the payment to the fired employee. So offset money is nice on the back end, but it does nothing to soften the blow at the time of the firing.

I agree, Pruitt can be fired. However, I’m not confident in Fulmer to hire the right man for the job

I've defended Fulmer as much as anyone. But, when the news of a new contract hit 2 games into this season, my mind was utterly blown. Was hoping and assuming we'd break .500 on this year and it would work. I was wrong. 3-7 is the outer limit.
CJP has a near capacity talented recruiting class, was not a good commodity then, and had not completed 3 yrs as HC ... and Phil restructured his buyout!!!
I'm not joking. The chancellor and BoT need to pull him in and hold him accountable for that decision. Should have never happened until seasons end, where we could get a good read on his success level.

Yep and they've got plenty of money to throw around too. Almost done paying Butch might as well give Pruitt a golden parachute. Just keep making that ex-head coach payment and it's mundane and ordinary like the water bill, light bill, car payment etc nothing out of the ordinary.
Yup... just yup

When you think about it, Pruitt is not the only one it protects.

One thing to keep in mind. Every governmental institution is keeping tabs of all costs directly or indirectly associated with COVID with hope that there is a stimulus package passed that trickles down to universities and cities. This could be a source of funds as well....
Let's hope the government doesn't give out free money to fire coaches. We have a big enough deficit as it is. Government spending is out of control

I could see Fulmer taking an "interim" head coach role for a couple years if thing get bad. Schools are going broke, terrible time to make a change.

I’ve never not watched a game, been close before. If Fuller were to make himself interim I don’t know if I could watch. That would make this program even more of a laughing stock

He gets a free pass this year with covid lost revenue. Next year the seat will be extremely hot. When I see a lack of development, then how he continues to push JG, sorry he's not an elite coach. I think Chaney calls very conservative because he has no faith in JG. If you accept mediocrity, he stays. If not you gotta send him down the road. I bet money our coordinators start making lateral moves this offseason. If so that will be telling!

Maybe its just me, but I tire of hiring just to fire when it costs millions each and every time! This is a roller coaster I'd like to get off! What happened to the hype of the Vols having the best coaching staff around?

Oh, and by the way .... with the right contract stipulations, I'd take Freeze in a heartbeat! Just say'n from Mississippi! Liberty is kick'n butt now and we're still scratchin' ours! (and I said way back when we were seeking Butch's replacement)

Tennessee second-half point totals in its last four games: Georgia: 0 Kentucky: 0 Alabama: 7 (when it was 42-10) Arkansas: 0

We can't attract a top tier coach. Something stinks somewhere we can't immediately see. Boosters, administration, AD, whatever, some of them , all of them... That and our timing is horrible. We wait until no real coaches are available, let three use us to negotiate raises, and end up with the next "up and comer." So somewhere up the chain we have an issue. So would we go after someone like freeze that can actually coach with his baggage? Hell no, we wouldn't. Wish we would, but no. So who leaves their day job to moonlight as a real coach here?
