Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Look at places that have taken Covid seriously - like MA. We got slammed when it first hit, but since then, have taken prudent measures (READ: NOT SHUT DOWN THE ECONOMY), and as a direct result, have done a pretty good job of keeping the virus from spreading.

In contrast, look at TN. Didn't get slammed initially, but many like you ignored and disregarded the simple steps needed to help curb a pandemic. Result:

It ain't rocket science.

Socially distance.
Wear a mask.
Wash your hands often.

So MA is above 1400 deaths per million and TN is around 450 per million. What was your point agsin?

Yet... the 7 day average in MA is now trending up too despite the measures. I think the deniers have their heads up their asses, but so do a lot of the “follow the science” crowd that think any level of infection is unacceptable and they can totally stop a virus from spreading like a virus. Just a little common sense please.

You will not like to hear this. McRib hosted a gathering at our house on Saturday. The therapists from the hospital and their families came. No one wore a mask. The professionals who work in the hospital are not worried about it (for younger, relatively healthy people).
I'm overjoyed to hear it. Most nurses in the ICU while not in direct contact with pts will pull their masks down.
We need to be cautious around elderly and sick. Healthy people should not have to mask. JMO.

Funny, you failed to point out the marked increase in cases recently (see above graph in MA). Is this because everyone is misbehaving?

Mass. Tops 1,000 New Coronavirus Cases for First Time Since May

Tennessee didn't have an early spike because there wasn't much virus here, at the time. As is seen in basically every area, the curve goes up and it goes down, and it's virtually impossible to see any effect of lockdowns or mask mandates.

Care to mark on these graphs when lockdown and masks were ordered?

I would guess that a lot of places in MA are near herd immunity. Tennessee is more scattered out as far as population goes. Will take longer to work through here.

Masks are probably not that effective at all. 66 percent of infections at one particular time in NYC came from people who isolated and were around no one else.....except the folks living in adjacent apartments, indicating that the virus is definitely airborne. The CDC has indicated that 85 percent (I think that was the number) of people who caught COVID recently always wore masks in public.

Just another fact of the different data tracking...

US averages around 77,000 flu tests per year.
We’ve done 135,000,000 C19 tests.

But past data show asymptomatic influenza infections range as high as 50%.

More data:

MA 1431 deaths per million
TN 458 deaths per million

Yep, initially all the states affected didn't know how to deal with the virus. Stupid things were done (see NY's handling of retirement homes). Now treatments are better, doctors / regulators know how to handle things better.

Those who haven't accepted there were going to be deaths from this since the beginning are deluded. I have noted headlines saying we could have saved 200k with proper measures... That is not the truth.

My understanding is the vast majority of the US is nowhere near herd immunity rates for prior infection... which is why experts are warning that the WH's new "plan" for the virus (herd immunity) will result in hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths.

What does that have to do with the fact your state has 3x more deaths per million than TN?

You get on here pretending to be smarter than you are, but anyone with half a mind can see you look at Covid numbers like JG looks at defenses, confused.

Your ship is sinking Monte....can you swim?

Not really his state , he booked it down to the Outter Banks for some fishing while MA was doing their thing . Lol

Of note, I have seen several articles posing concern about the combination of influenza and CV19 now facing us this winter.

Anyone heard that before?

As I said early in the summer, it is very possible that our response will actually lead to an INCREASE in mortality by pushing the curve rightwards into the winter months, when hospitals are already full and people are suffering from other respiratory illnesses.

We are at 225k deaths in 10 months, it is unrealistic to expect it will get anywhere near 300k.

Ehhhh I'm pretty sure that early on (In late April or Early May) sampling in NYC indicated that 18 percent of people they sampled at that time had already been exposed. Most recovered with zero symptoms and never knew they were infected. How many more out there were exposed and recovered with zero symptoms? Answer: Millions.

"Experts" lol. I'm pretty sure that common sense would teach someone that if you want to stop a virus (especially a weak one like this) that doesn't regularly mutate significantly that herd immunity is the best answer. Not ineffective masks, business closures, lock downs, ect. You only prolong the problem that way.

Heh. Well I swam for UT back in the day, but yeah, my fat will help me float now.

All the states initially infected screwed up in various ways as this was a novel virus. TN had the benefit of learning lessons at the expense of MA lives.

I disagree. Big time. We're just getting into the cold and flu season... I think we'll have 100K+ infections per day shortly. The average rate of 800 to 1000 deaths per day will go up significantly IMO. In 90 days time, that's 100K+ additional deaths by the end of January alone.
