Second point, when a coach is getting fired, the AD will line up a donor to cover the buyout up front, usually. So if you can imagine Haslam as the guy on the phone saying "Yeah, I got the buyout, just get a new coach" and then the coach is fired. It doesn't all come from one donor, usually, but several big time athletic dept. donors will step up and cover that cost

WRONG! All of the buyouts have been paid monthly to the former coach by the AD from AD budget with no "pennies from heaven" from any of these magical donors some of you talk about. This is exactly why the finances in the AD are in such a **** show that the AD actually had to borrow money from the university to pay off one of these clowns several years ago.

So many here talk about these 'boosters' who are willing to lay down $5-6 million to bail out the AD for a bad hire but they never come forward at nut cuttin time. There are people who donate big money to the University but its to build a building with their name on it, not to cover up incompetence.

We have good skill players pretty much across the board, and very talented freshman from what I have seen. We'll be fine as long as we find a QB capable of playing at a high level in the SEC.

Maurer seemed like a gamer last year. He just needs to limit his INTs and injuries. If he is now healthy, I would like to see him in the Bama game.

Given more reps, Shrout might be the guy, but he doesn't seem to be the gamer Maurer is.

Bailey has all the credentials. We just need to see if they pan out, and God I hope so.

We also have Salter coming in next year who looks very highly skilled as well.

Embarrassing losses are just that, embarrassing, but let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.

I'm not going to get into a shouting match with you about what I stated. but I know for a fact that what I stated is correct. How it shows up on the ledger is a different matter.

and you continue to confuse the university and the athletic department. These are two separate entities with two separate budgets.

For every millionaire, there are 100s of destitute coaches. You have to pay your dues, sometimes for many years, making next to nothing. I met James Franklin when he was at Vandy and in his early stints, he had to sleep in his car and use the locker room showers.

Buyouts are part of the game. When hiring a coach, you are competing against every other team that is also in the hunt. UT could institute a "no buyout" clause and all it would do is give the other schools a competitive advantage in coaching searches.

The buyouts are simply what the market demands. All of these coaches have buyouts, in some cases enormous buyouts. In a line of work that is this financially lucrative, has extreme levels of turnover, and where the rewards for having good teams are immense, coaches are able to secure these buyouts for their services. It isn't like Tennessee is the only school that pays coaches buyouts in the event of a firing without cause.

It's been real curious to me that the same folks saying "no buyouts" are the same folks who say "we don't pay enough for coaches." If Tennessee offered contracts with no buyouts, guess what, they'd take offers from other schools that do have them.

The real issue is that the coaching hires themselves just haven't worked out. Nick Saban and Dabo have gigantic buyouts too, but it doesn't matter. We just haven't hired a good coach - that's the problem.

Tennessee took $11,434,056 in direct support from the university in 2013 and $250,000 in 2014 but no direct support in 2015. It took $2,391,197 in direct institutional support in 2005, but none between 2005 and 2013.


You're either dreaming or some of your high roller friends are peeing on your leg and telling you its raining. There has never been 'big money donors" buying out coaches salaries. That is on the backs of the fan base. If there were big donors why the $11mil direct support the year they happen to owe Derek Dooley $12mil? Pure coincidence?

A portrait of whatever CEO/football coach who convinced an employer that a multi year contract with huge buy outs was within that organization’s best interests should be required to be hung over any CEO/ football coach’s fireplace. Pure genius.

Wil Muschamp has a buyout of $15,378,750.

Kirk Ferentz has a buyout of $21.571 million.

Wllie Taggart walked away with over $18 million when shown the door at FSU. FSU also owed $3 million to Oregon from Taggart's buyout there and they also assumed a $1.3 million buyout Oregon still owed South Florida.

Ok, I am as upset as anybody....but two weeks ago everything was great and rising. Maybe during a virus and not enough practice and a completely inconsistent QB we are over reacting?

I think the QB situation is the one thing that is now totally incompetent, but the D and a better than years...two good RBs, 3 good WRs. Not sure if OL really bad or bad calls.

This game should be a wake up call, but I am not ready to say everyone sucks.

Next year after real practice, a spring game, a new QB....then will lose my mind.
