I see everyone's giving their opinion of the game this morning. Watched it at a friend's house last night so didn't get home til late. Not sure what's all been said.

First impressions, I'm happy we won. Very happy. South Carolina played hard at home, so kudos to them for a good game. They're a raw team, but I think they've got the makings to upset someone this year, thankfully it wasn't us.

Now, about us. First things first, I think Pruitt should have gone for it on that fourth and 1 where we missed the FG. That's not hindsight, I was screaming at my friend's TV to go for it because I knew it was a bad spot for a FG. That was the only coaching decision, off the top of my head, that I really questioned.

JG didn't lose the game for us. That's a good thing. He made some god-awful inaccurate throws, but he didn't lose the game for us. But, to his credit, there were one or two throws I thought were on the money that the receivers just missed. Most of the incomplete passes, tho, were just bad passes. I did enjoy seeing him scramble some.

If Jeremy Banks is going to contribute to this team, he's going to have to control his temper. He obviously has a chip on his shoulder, but that does us no good if he can't control himself. Young man needs to make better decisions, in life and on the field.

Albright needs to spend the week practicing under pressure. He's a scholarship player. I get this was his first game, but he needs to earn that scholarship.

Overall, I don't think it was a bad first game. We saw lots of rust. Look around the league, most teams showed the same thing. We're not up to actual game speed yet, which is why we normally start off with gimme teams. Starting off with an SEC opponent is rough. But we won, and we should be really happy for that. Things will get better as players find their rhythm. Thankfully, we get Mizzou at home next week. No disrespect to Mizzou, but let's face it, they're not top tier SEC right now. It's another game to tune up before we face the real big boy competition of the SEC.

Guys and gals, I really think we're going to be okay. I'm still not sold on JG, and hopefully we do enough next week to see another QB take some snaps, but I think we'll be just fine.

Fingers-crossed.
Good post

I don’t get the criticism about Chaney either. If the QB and WR were able to connect more consistently, we’d have hung 40+ on them. He put them in position to blow SC out.

My only criticism is the lack of an effort to establish the run in the first half and the 3 & out with under 8 min to play. SC could not stop Chandler. Wish he had 20 carries.

Commentators railed on all night that their DL was undersized. We got some hosses and should have had them completely gassed by the 4th quarter.

Bottom line is Pruitt et al may view JG as a game manager, who makes fewest mistakes.

Iyam, that's a fine mantra IF you have a decent running game. Which, if we had Cade I think we can run on anyone, incl Bama. Issue I have is we get too pass happy.

JG cant make easy throws. And, when you play a defense worth anything, which is 60% of this conference, that indecision/statue esque play at QB turns game manager into minced meat. And turnovers happen.

If main guy isnt wide open for 30 yrds, JG doesnt anticipate it. He doesnt see the field. He's had 5 years to get it. It's insufferable.

Let me preface this. He has earned his starting time. He is a VFL. This doesnt mean I'm bashing kid personally. Its no small feat to get to this point, but, Id think at 5 years we know what we got?

A lot of the running stopped when Jahmir Johnson went out. He and trey were mauling people. Wanya is good in pass pro but needs more strength and nastiness to be consistent in run blocking.

good point. but, with our depth at OL. Should we not be able to exert our wills on a pretty below average Cock Dline?

Awful route? He had the defender beat. The ball was supposed to go over his left shoulder he was lucky to even attempt to adjust to the ball most receivers wouldn’t even have the hindsight to know to try and find the ball. You ever played receiver? Making an adjustment like that is hard as heck.

In JG’s defense, the Tennessee WRs should know which shoulder the throw will be to...the opposite of whichever side is called for and expected to go to. C’mon now, you have seen this before. JJ and Calloway were just very good at knowing what is happening and adjusting to make him look better. 🤔

Still pretty young at OL in spots but I agree. They will gel.
It is game 1, ill defer. But, I think our collective frustration is how can we still be this bad at QB? We are a qb away from being pretty darn good.

*some of it could also be young WR play.

But, he played same boneheaded way last year.0

Lol exactly and then people saying Chaney called a bad game..... he put JG in situation to convert multiple 3rd downs for us to go 0 for 8 on 3rd downs..... I mean we had guys running open.... Miss, miss, miss dunno how much better of a game Chaney can call lol

He can run more. If JG is inconsistent, I would prefer a run on 3rd and 3 in positive territory. We then did that on 3rd and 2 (when we missed FG), but the call wasn’t very creative.

I’ve said I really like Chaney, but he has to help with the limitations and be just as good as we are asking JG to be. Chaney called some good plays in losses last year, and JG made terrible decisions. That’s just in him, and you have to put him in positions to minimize poor plays. If Peyton Manning was our QB, Chaney has some slack knowing the right play would be made 95% of the time.

yea that’s the play I’m talking about but even with that said that’s on the HC. He should have calmly told the official to call a TO before the clock ran out or taken a delay of game. His unit wasn’t prepared to run the play clock all the way down. That’s a mistake and could have been a big one
That’s why I’m saying go back and re-watch it closely. Pruitt was standing right next to the official so he had to have told him that. And the unit was prepared to run the clock down but Henry made a mental error; that’s why Pruitt said “What’s wrong with you?” when he came to the sideline.

In this particular case, it wasn’t a clock management error by Pruitt but rather a player mistake.

Went over to a Gamecock site, not much difference in the banter between the two sites except we won! Think some of u forget this fact.
Not sure what some of you expected, countless players missing practice, had to figure it was going to be rough. Yet we won for the 7th time in a row! Something to be said about a team who believes in each other and finds a way. Happy to be 1 and 0..

JG missed throws. But...I love Chaney, but he sometimes puts JG in calls that we don’t need him to be in. I know pmaycalling can’t be perfect, but we need Chaney to be really good. The rollout miss to Fant was bad, but we could have run a couple of times they called passes. Plus, I would like a little more creativity.

If JG hits on those passes instead of throwing bullets over or behind receivers as a 5th year SR, the play calls look way better.

Difficult to judge an OC when the plays that work to get guys open aren’t executed due to poor QB play.

I don't think I've felt this good since March. Tennessee football on A Fall Saturday night. Other than watching my daughter dance, it don't get no better than this.

My daughter (the dancer) called me in a panic because she couldn’t get the tv to work downstairs. My wife and her friends were having a girls’ weekend at our lake house. They all went to Texas A&M. They were going to watch that game.
My daughter is definitely a VFL. She wanted to watch the Tennessee game even by herself rather than the Aggie-Andy game. I couldn’t talk her through fixing the issue over the phone, so I drove out, fixed the TV issue for her and made it back home in time to start the game an hour late.
(Had to come back home as my 18 year old would get into trouble unsupervised...not that I care, but per my wife it would be all my fault) damn aggies 😂

My daughter is great! 🤠

My son Is basically an Aggie 😳

Players are not going to play a perfect game and coaches are not going to coach a perfect game. Learn from your mistakes and move on. I will say I thought Chaney was calling more passes to loosen up the defense but also more thinking about future games. Thought it was to get JG and receivers more practice since they have had little and to make future opponents not just prepare for the run. If half of the misses would have worked nobody would be talking about it.

I will say one thing I noticed during the game... we look WAY bigger, WAY bigger than usual. Like we have some big dudes. That’s really exciting. We’re probably one of the biggest teams in the conference. I love it

Simmons looked bigger, broader than the 2-3 OL trying to block him. When he landed on the sc rb, I was surprised that the rb could get up. 😁
