Some thoughts from my 12th season opener as a VN’er:
1. First, what a great day - the closest to a non-crazy, non-politically charged, non-pandemic frenzied day in what seems like forever. Had a wonderful time cooking out and watching games with the family.
2. We were oh so close to blowing the lid off that game and running away with it. JG was not sharp tonight. However, you could tell from the throws that he missed that our receivers were open a lot of times. If he gets dialed in, our offense can be very potent. He’ll be better next week.
3. Chaney has to establish and then stick with the running game better. Just has to. The series in the 4th with about 8 minutes left, we went pass pass pass punt. Can’t happen.
4. We never really made adjustments to stop their slant passes. That was very troubling. I’m scared to think of what would’ve happened had they gotten the ball back at the end.
5. Pass rush was better than advertised.
6. O-Line was very very good.
7. Chandler and Gray were both great. They each needed 5 more touches a piece. We’d have won comfortably had they gotten more touches.
8. USCjr QB played better than I thought he could. They aren’t a bad team at all. They’ll win some games this year. 5-5.
9. Id feel bad for Muschamp, except that no I won’t cause I’ll never forget what he said after they won in Neyland that first time we went Checker Neyland.
10. Man it feels great to win. We’re going to improve a lot by next week. We have a very good team, they just need to gel. This year could be special.
