As much as I think he doesnt win re election, I concede that is not a crowd drawn by an incumbent president in doubt of reelection.

This race is absolutely confusing to me.

Same here. I've seen first hand a lot of enthusiasm for Trump and almost zero for Biden but I see daily how Trump is behind in the polls and is so unpopular.

There is an easy explanation. Crowd sizes do not correlate well to votes, so the better question is: are the people attending these events being organized to GOTV and fill the campaign coffers?

There are so many examples of candidates who drew amazing crowds and lost miserably, Bernie being the most recent.

Herbert Hoover drew the throng below to Cincinnati in 1932, and many other giant crowds, but did not crack 40% in the end despite holding a very devoted minority following. Hard to believe now, considering the result, but the newspapers were shocked by the size and breadth of FDR's win because just like today those folks were from the class of Americans who weren't standing in long lines to receive basic services.

Trump will definitely do better than Hoover, but he has similarly worked very hard to cement a very low ceiling of very passionate support. Will it be enough?

I get your point. I am on record DJT does not win. But I've never seen anything like these crowds with a candidate headed towards defeat (primaries not considered).
Maybe we could get @1972 Grad to chime in on his personal experience witnessing the Hoover campaign.

It's odd to see all of the enthusiasm in multiple walks of life for Trump but him still far behind in the race. Heck there was even a few African Americans participating in the Trump boat parade on Tim's Ford a couple weeks ago.

He's very popular with the good people in the real world. The NE, west coast, and failing D cities are another matter.

I was too young to remember the Hoover campaign in any detail.

The examples go on and on. Eugene McCarthy got Woodstock level crowds AND Woodstock level organization when it came time to get people into voting booths.
