Way VQ’s podcast paints it, Beckwith is a big factor in that candidacy.
My understanding when I listened to it was that was more the case because of availability (or lack thereof) of the other RBs, primarily hodge and smalls.

My interpretation may be incorrect though and he could be a bigger factor there than I anticipate.

Mine was that Hodge is dinged up but that’s immaterial in the grand scheme.

Pretty good take! Okay though, you do know we have a Defense as well, we don't just play offense, this isn't the PAC-12 LOL... Lemme see what your thoughts are on our Defense right now... Our line is up and coming with a lot of talent, but otherwise I think we are solid front to back...

Based on reports recently, the DL isn't performing very well. There were rumors we could have a few guys opt out at that position. I think our biggest strength will be Tootoo and the DBs. I think we will struggle to pass rush in particular.

From the SEC:

"To play a football game, the SEC has established minimum thresholds of at least 53 scholarship players available to participate and the following minimum number of position scholarship players available to begin a game: seven (7) offensive linemen (which includes one center), one (1) quarterback and four (4) defensive linemen. The impacted institution has the option to play the game with fewer than the 53 scholarship players or fewer than the minimum number of position players listed above if it elects to do so. Otherwise, upon approval by the Commissioner, the game would be rescheduled or declared a no contest.

In addition, should an institution determine there are compelling reasons why it cannot begin a contest regardless of the scholarship and position minimums above, the institution may request to have the game rescheduled or, if the game cannot be rescheduled, for the game to be considered a no contest by presenting data (including total number of players not available to participate) outlining reasons why the game should not be played as scheduled. The final decision to reschedule or declare the game a no contest is vested only with the Commissioner."

So literally the NFL policy for roster

Yeah, I love Gray. Hopefully he’s gotten stronger.

Chandler is what he is. So is JG. Expecting anything different from those guys would be naive.

Going to come down to turnovers and redzone efficiency.

Hasn't Chandler been at least a little hurt the last few years? I remember he had an amazing start to his career and kind of dropped off. If Gray is the starter, great, but I think Chandler could surprise this year.

Oh yeah? Didn't realize that's what their policy was
Yeah something like 53 max or something. But I think they’re saying 53 minimum scholarship players have to be “available” or something along those lines. I don’t know enough to tell you for sure

His sophomore year he looked explosive and had a good YPC average. Everyone expected big things for his junior year, but it didn’t pan out. He was nicked up for a lot of the season, we were terrible early on, and then Gray looked amazing. If he’s healthy, Chandler could absolutely still have a huge year behind this oline.

Speaking of our pass rush, we were 3rd in the conference last year for the number of sacks we gained with 34 for all games. Against just SEC opponents we were 2nd best in the conference with 21.

So what is the secret to our success in the pass rush department given how we seem to always be wringing our hands over our need to develop a pass rush?

This from Bill Connelly:

The Vols' primary defensive strengths last year: They never got torched (first in the country in gains of 30+ yards allowed), and they lit you up on blitz downs. Better, they attacked your QB from all angles. Only one player had more than three sacks (linebacker Darrell Taylor), but nine had at least two. Taylor's now a Seattle Seahawk, but seven of the other eight are back, and Pruitt and coordinator Derrick Ansley appear to have plenty to work with.
We return 22.5 of those 34 sacks from last year’s defense. I think it’s probably the defense as much as it is the players that leads to production. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this year’s defense top last year’s in the sack department, even given the lesser number of regular season games this year. jmo.

Good post Chatta. I've been wondering why the concern with the DL. I understand CJP fanning the flames, but he's probably just trying to light a fire under them. We lost Taylor. Gooden didn't play anyways. Soloman and Middleton were rumored to be opting out. Both are practicing and Middleton flat out said he's playing. I don't think we lose any production on the DL. Possibly even better, especially if we run the ball well behind our massive OL and actually let the defense rest.

That's phenomenal when considering where our line started last year. Excited for the future.
