I’m not sure if the policies are different from Shelby County to Knox County, but I assume the schools are relying on their own health departments.

I will say that Memphis had some starting defensive players out against Arkansas State because of contract tracing. Apparently the coaches had to make some changes on the fly and learned about it on Friday.

Austin Peay played without their top returning receiver their first game due to contact tracing if I remember correctly.

Coach Graham will be absolutely huge for Ty IMO. I'm sure having Weinke & YAC as position coaches stunted his development a bit. His natural ability has got him by thus far.

I finally got around to Pruitt’s media session from Saturday and I got the idea that the 44 guys missing practice was put out there for effect. It included guys like Pope and Whitehead, both who are recovering from surgery. Pruitt said Whitehead should be ready and available in games starting about mid-season. The 44 also included McDonald who because of surgery wasn’t expected to play this year anyway. Brian Maurer is nursing a hamstring injury so figure he is in that 44 too.

It was my understanding from what he said that there were 27 or 28 guys out due to Covid and 7 or 8 of those had tested positive with the rest being out due to contact tracing protocols I think required by Knox County. Apparently there are some other guys out due to being a bit banged up which is normal for camp or the season for that matter. Anyway, I think they may be trying to get the county to update their contact tracing protocols and a bit of public pressure might be the only path forward on that. jmo.

Pruitt said on Saturday he was excited about our offense this year but was disappointed with the physicality of our defensive line right now. I think JT is the guy behind JG because Brian isn’t available physically and HB isn’t ready for a lot of the playbook. It is my impression though that there is a limited portion of the playbook that HB is already really good at. I’m not disparaging JT but technically he’s #2 by default. According to Pruitt on Saturday they’re apparently only repping JG and JT at QB and JG is taking the most reps.

I think Pruitt said we were missing 31 guys on offense last week or something like that. I’m not sure but I sort of think a lot of or at least some of those guys may have been walk-ons. Anyway, I’m not worried about it. And I don’t think we should be all that concerned about the “lack of physicality” of our defensive linemen either. I mean we know these guys. They don’t have the same talent level as the guys across the trench from them. I mean we have some guys with talent but they’re probably not going to be one of the top 2 defensive line groups in the conference this year and in fact our offensive line will likely make most defensive lines they go up against this year look like they’re not all that good. jmo
