Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Kemp's own recommendations urge mask wearing in public, social distancing, and shelter-in-place for the elderly and health-compromised. This is an ideological squabble. Mayors & councils in cities experiencing a spike in covid-19 diagnoses (increasing at an increasing rate) and health care facilities at or near maximum capacity passed ordinances mandating masks in public (there is a limit to applicability within private spaces). Kemp is a Republican, and as such, he has acknowledged his party's advocacy for local control. However, in this matter, his personal conviction on the limits of government power have prompted him to overreach local control and demand adherence to his recommendations, only. So, Governor Kemp finds himself suing his capitol city's government over who has the authority in this matter. The court outcome will impact the other Georgia cities as well.

I note the difference in the Republicans' disposition towards the pandemic vs their actions after the terrorist attacks on 9/11. Then, Republicans crafted the Patriot Act, which empowered the Federal Government and curtailed the rights of individual citizens. In the face of the pandemic (which has killed more US citizens than the last four wars combined), Republicans have stuck to the ideology of where government power should reside and be exercised, leaving response largely in the hands of the state and local governments, and several have been outspoken against government mandated behavior to curtail the spread of infections - recommendations are fine, mandates are an imposition on the rights of the individual.

The above could be a subject for a lively discussion. Alas, reasoned discussion took a back set to bluster, threat, and blanket condemnation years ago. In this sociopolitical climate and during an election year, debate isn't on the menu.

Well, I'm going to retreat to other forums before someone accuses me of being either a "libtard" or a "white male apologist."

Great points. Forgot about W and the Patriot Act.

He is wrong about what? That masks save lives?

He is protecting freedom here. And that's a two way street. You can still protect yourself with a mask. No one is taking that away. He isnt even taking away the ability of individual stores or businesses to require masks.

It's just that the government cant force people to wear masks. Which is the right call.

The arguments here are being obtuse o the point of lying about the situation.

Ohhh reeeeaaaaally?

Can the government force people to wear seat belts? Is that the right call, too?

Makes sense.

Yes it does if you pull your head out of your butts.

He agrees masks are a good idea. But requiring them is not.

It's not a mutually exclusive set of ideas.

To Mick or whoever's seatbelts concern. Even if it wasnt the law, I am going to wear mine, and I am going to make sure all passengers wear one. Doesnt make the requirement to wear them a good thing.

You can take that thought process and apply it to everything. Everyone has to wear a helmet to protect against falls. Everyone has to fully cover themselves in clothing to protect against the sun. Oh its flu season again time to don your hazmat suits. I mean come on, we have to treat it seriously. If you argue against the mild inconvenience of a suit you clearly want people to die.

Imo. No.

You treat people like kids. They act like kids. We have seen, pretty conclusively at this point, that protecting us from ourselves leads to more stupidity. Not less. Make people face the consquences of their own actions instead of enforcing bs societal consquences.

I wear a mask. I wear a seat belt. But I dont see an argument for the requirements of such to be a good thing.

The real irony here is that the longer this pandemic is prolonged, the slower the economic recovery will be. Trump clearly needs the economy to be roaring back heading into the election season.

Instead of capitulating that something so innocuous as wearing a mask could be helpful, you grouse about your "freedom". If Trumps nut-huggers had a lick of sense you'd be urging your fellow red-hats to put on a mask. You guys are your own worst enemy's and don't even realize it.
They reject the best possible thing we can do to open the economy in the name of personal freedom and blame everyone else.

Funny how anecdotal everything is just depending on where you live . I went across the street yesterday to hug my “extremely “ liberal neighbor for putting a flag in my yard on the 4th of July early in morning at day break . Neither she nor I , nor the other neighbors with two kids had a mask on . I probably couldn’t find a Trump supporter around here if I offered to pay them to say it . The stores around here are now hit or miss as far as employees wearing them . It’s a strange and weird thing to watch other cities fighting to force people to wear one . There’s a mandate here but it’s not enforceable by the cops so everybody just ignores it . A stark example of what would happen if we defunded the cops around here . Lol
Well you are obviously making this up, because your neighbor would beat you to death with a rake while the Soviet anthem played in the background.

My very liberal neighbor loves her country ( former navy ) calling her a commie would probably get you shot , stabbed or ran over . Lol

Have you ever had a government official force you to put in a seatbelt ?

It is self-enforcing. As a moving violation, failure to wear a seat belt will lead to points against your record. Get enough points, lose your license.

So, yeah, you are being forced to do something.

Lol no it won’t . I’ve driven hundreds of thousands of miles with and without it on . I’ve had one ticket ( in Kentucky ) as I was pulling into a hotel literally in their driveway about 40 yards from the front door , I released my seatbelt and a state patrol was watching me in my mirror . The law states your vehicle must be at a complete stop . That was $15 and it doesn’t go against my license .

Yay neighbor!

It’s a weird mix around here with so many being former military . They love their country and their 2a but also very liberal . I’d love to ask how they make that work in their heads whathing the left go against those beliefs but we don’t talk politics.

Well that is why you are still alive, you left it alone. Smart. Otherwise they will beat you to death with a rake while listening to the Soviet anthem.

Yeah I’m not worried that a liberal with 3 US flags in her yard will be playing the Soviet anthem . If I had to pick a neighbor to watch the back door when your comrades invade us , it would be her . Heaven help the first ones through that door until she ran out of ammo . 😊

Maybe but I wouldn't be so sure, I get everyone is frustrated and with good reason.

But put on a mask, give it a few weeks and if it doesn't work then we try something else. Give it a honest try and see what happens

CDC director: U.S. could get coronavirus "under control" in 4–8 weeks if all wear masks

Say if we did this for 4-8 weeks and get it inder control, how do we know if they're not gonna move the goalposts again? That's why we are the shape we're in now,i as lack of overall trust in general.

I don't trust anyone in the current situation, Trump included.
