I haven’t see anything so far to suggest anyone on our staff has ever had a relationship with him. The LSU fans think he’s looking to leave because he wanted to play safety not OLB. His recruiting evaluation said he could play anywhere from DB to WR to ILB to OLB but thought his highest ceiling was as a pass rusher. Another issue may be he may not want to change his body (put on the bulk) the way they want him to for the LB position. Supposedly he is a phenomenal athlete and played at the highest classification for Texas high school ball.
One additional wrench thrown into the works is his defensive coordinator, David Aranda, left LSU after the 2019 season to become the new head football coach at Baylor. LSU hired Bo Pelini to replace Aranda as their defensive coordinator and Pelini is switching LSU from a 3-4 to a 4-3 base defense. I'm guessing you don't need as many linebackers in a 4-3 vs a 3-4. jmo.
It seems like most LSU fans think Brooks likely follows Aranda to Baylor which is kind of funny since Aranda wouldn’t let him on the field as a safety and basically said the only way you can get on the field right now is as a pass rusher. Brooks took the deal and apparently impressed the fans. He’s like a bullet coming off the line or a heat seeking missile when sent after the QB.
I don’t know anything about his coverage skills but that might be the issue keeping him away from his position of choice OR it could be he has such a high ceiling as a pass rusher a coach just can bring himself to not put him there. If we could figure out a way to make him happy he’d be a good get. jmo.
