Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2025-26

Pat Summitt coached the Olympic team in 1984......and just who in the heck is suppose to coach them ?

Of course, sasaq answered your question; but let’s set Coach Dawn aside for a moment. BTW, I’m sure you know of the praise The Great One had for her, and she (Coach Staley) has certainly earned the right to lead our country in international competition.

But, the little fellow blatantly abused the privilege. And, whether or not you agree, his leaving Candace off the team was, to many of us (and near-countless others, globally) his last vulgar act of waving the bird at Coach Summitt. I know, I know, “The coach doesn’t choose the players.”

Oh, and did I tell you he’s a cheat?

So, not to group Dawn with that sneaky snake, it’s a bad practice for so many obvious reasons, and if for no other, there could be lurking, somewhere, another just like him.

And, aside from WNBA coaches, there are hundreds of others qualified, from other divisions of college basketball.

Edited to add:
Kings' Nancy Lieberman reflects on impact of her friend Pat Summitt
Do you really think the little thing would’ve passed on Nancy Lieberman?

My nuanced response: the best WBB coaches, by a long shot, are in the NCAA. *And* having NCAA coaches running the Olympic team can lead to sketchy circumstances, like Candace being very obviously snubbed for 2016. (To think, if only she hadn't dunked on UConn, in Storrs, leaving poor Renee Montgomery in the dust...lol.)

That's our point. Look at how many Uconns in the camp be4 virus started and look at players left out. Diana & Bird are not suppose to be there with their age almost 40 this yr and they still have Moore on the list. Someone who had not even played over a yr. Then, look also at Uconns other WNBA players and tell us what u think..Even 2 of their college players went to camp.

One hell of a fine post.....
Talk about an unfair player pipeline to one college....This is so wrong.

Someday, when their coach is no longer the anointed one, and has retired, the good folks of UConn will start to complain too about the hypocrisy of one coach being in charge for so long....

Cheryl Reaves, Mike Thibault, Bill Laimbeer, Brian Alger etc. All WNBA champion winning coaches.

How about some of the women that coach men? Nancy Liberman, Jenny Boucher, even a Kara Lawson who has served from player to analyst, to now a coach. I’m sure there are more options that could coach a stacked USA team to a gold medal.

There is no denying that being the USA head coach gives you a little more shine when recruiting to go along with Dawn’s accolades. She’s earned the right to coach that team but no denying it does look to give her an advantage.

I’m not complaining and I will be happy if the time ever comes where Kara or Nikki McCray ever get that chance!

It should be a WNBA coach pure and simple. As it is it gives the NCAA coach an unfair recruiting advantage!

I wouldn’t mind that. However just like I said in my previous post Dawn is one of the few players and coaches I think has earned that seat. Some others have just been placed on it. Dawn has earned that right to me. I also agree it gives an advantage but just like Muffett and other coaches people will have to just beat Dawn while she is in that position like they did Geno.

I personally think Mike Thibault should be a USA coach because he is the most winning coach in the WNBA but I wouldn’t be down on one of the ladies coaching in the NBA to be the head USA coach.

Your umbrage with the USA National coach is misplaced. The USA coach with the ability to most effect College recruiting is the U16 coach. That coach gets the finest 50 sophomore and freshman players during the selection process and then works with the top 12 players. That coach has months to analyze players and develop relationships with players and families. How does Dawn coaching pro;s affect LV basketball. It doesn't get her more attention or recognition. But the U16 coach has all the best players in hand when they are developing relationships with college coaches. How would you have liked Dawn coaching the last u16 team;Janiah Barker, Lauren Betts, KK Bransford, Sonia Citron, Amari DeBerry, Timea Gardiner, Londynn Jones, Olivia Miles, Aaliyah Moore,Saylor Poffenbarger, Kiki Rice, Payton Verhulst

I like this ides,,,makes it truly an amateur environment across the board, players and coaches and give both a platform for movement upwards

I see what you’re getting at but there is NO WAY a young girl looking at Geno and all the players he had on his 2012 roster or the 2016 roster didn’t become intrigued by the thought of being coached by him. Same thing for Dawn.

Being the USA coach carries prestige as it should, but to blindly think it doesn’t help recruiting in some aspect is crazy to me. Because this person is getting more exposure, has “coached” some of the greats, and “knows” what the olympic committee is looking for and can help get you there 😉

I can be there tomorrow. ;) (j/k, Coach).

Seriously, A. leaving Candace off the roster displayed the same sort of spite that led to Jordan having Zeke left off the Dream Team.

No question that a coach's extended, on-court coaching exposure is a huge advantage. In a sense, he/she is already regarded by the player as "my coach", and they get to witness firsthand the techniques and interactions with players. This has to create a favorable impression unless the coach is a total jerk or demonstrates favoritism. Most elite players prefer demanding coaches who will push them to excel, and then they have the positive vibes of the Olympic experience along with the additional bonding with players already in the coach's program or headed there. It becomes an extended recruiting trip for the top talent. No other coach can compete with that due to recruiting restrictions.

WNBA coaches can coach them. Houston Commet Van.C. coached them..When players all over use to represent usa and not all Uconns..It also should be rotational
I would agree that it should be rotational but not that it should be WNBA coaches alone.
