While it's a joke to some places in our country, it's been very real here in NYC. I saw this post today about a nurse going up from Orlando to NYC to help:

"I have a minute, and I know a lot of you have been checking in because I’ve been quiet the past few days, so I thought I’d shoot you guys a quick update.

Today is day 10 here on my NYC rescue assignment. It’s been a long, exhausting 10 days. I’m working night shift in an ER in south Bronx.

This experience has been life changing. I’m exhausted. Covid19 is everywhere here. The whole entire hospital is considered positive and you wear ppe from the moment you walk in till the moment you walk out.

The hospital I’m in is probably around 90% staffed by agency nurses because everyone is sick. The amount of damage Covid19 has had on NYC and the healthcare system here is terrifying because I know our healthcare everywhere else isn’t prepared for this kind of hit.

Covid19 is very isolating, it’s very devastating, and here in NYC it’s very very real. It also doesn’t discriminate. I have seen it from ages 16 all the way to 100. Patients are walking into this hospital, saying goodbye to their family thinking they will see them again as soon as they’re better, and they’re leaving in the back of a semi. The fear they must feel laying there struggling to breathe, all alone, is why I’m here.

I’m here so that there’s enough staff to safely take care of these patients. I’m here so that not all of them die with no one having the time to even have a conversation with them. I’m here because NYC is part of my country and I would hope that if my hometown gets hit like this, nurses would come to our rescue too.

I’m doing okay. The consecutive days, lack of sleep, and the non stop covid is exhausting. I am beyond appreciative of everyone who continues to check in. I can’t wait for a hug."
Here's an update from the same nurse who came to NYC to help from Orlando. It's long so I'll just insert the link
