I still like you as a football fan but the negativity and buying into something because of media or other drivers, I do not like that.

Media? Not at all. Don’t have time for that nonsense. My opinions are purely my own cobbled together from much reading, and I believe neither extreme at this point. I’m actually pretty encouraged right now.

In my line of work, it’s never about optimism vs pessimism, it’s about pragmatism...reality doesn’t have bias. People often confuse an engineer’s pragmatism for pessimism. It isn’t.

Reminds me of golf story. I was out with a group and was paired with a sales guy. One of our foursome pulled his tee shot out of play to the left, after which I (correctly) said, “sorry guy, that’s in the road”. The salesman looked at me and was clearly annoyed, saying “could you be any more negative?” To him the false hope was good, and my factual analysis was unwelcome. To me, quickly knowing the reality, good or bad, was best. Just a different perspective.

A lot of sports fans in general don’t care about baseball as a whole so they won’t tune in enough to appreciate it. Even golf haters and the goth emo crowd will tune into to watch Tiger now.
The greatest sumo wrestler in the world is unappreciated by those who don’t follow sumo wrestling. It’s called inconsequential. Baseball fans APPRECIATE Trout because great. Golf haters don’t watch golf. I don’t hate golf and I don’t watch whole tournaments...Tiger or no.

I sure don't mean to be that guy on a Friday night to come in here with doom and gloom but I found out this afternoon that my mom has Dementia. As many of you know I just buried my Dad last September after 12 years with Dementia. Now we are about to walk through it again with my mom. I love my Vol family and wanted to share this with you as I know in here over the years we have shared in so many laughs and heart aches both in football and in real life. Appreciate your prayers for this one is going to be more challenging in so many ways. Thanks ahead of time for the encouragement and prayers I will receive for all of you. GO VOLS!! Can't wait until August !!

So sorry. Having one parent with dementia and watch them deteriorate is heartbreaking enough and then having to go through it again, I pray that God gives you and your family strength.

Mike Trout is one of the best all around players of all time but Barry Bonds is still the most dangerous at the plate I've ever seen.

Say what you want about steroids but the guys hand eye coordination was ridiculous. There's never been a batter that pitchers were more scared to pitch to.

don’t like barry bonds never will because Hes a cheat with that being said Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame and I enjoyed the Mark McGuire,Barry bonds and Sammy Sosa years of baseball.more so of Bonds and McGuire saving baseball due to the strike..good stuff right there when baseball was fun.

My $0.02

There’s a “stain” on every generation of human beings. Vegans probably think our eating beef, poultry, and bacon, etc., is unconscionable. Time will tell who is right. Many folks think women terminating their pregnancies before childbirth will not be viewed favorably some time distant from now. The decimation of the Native American populations isn’t universally viewed as our finest hour. There are probably countless grievances we can hold against historical generations but I think it’s probably best just to try to learn from history and work to build a better world. The future is likely to condemn us for things we accept today which may be unimaginable in that future time. Slavery, for example didn’t start in the western hemisphere and the institution was thousands of years old. The end of slavery in America was a turning point in the millennia of things. I see that as an achievement of our Republic. At this point, I personally think the only thing I’m going to have to answer to future generations for is my fondness for prime rib, country ham, bbq chicken, savory catfish, and maybe my gas guzzling road machines. jmo.
Militant vegans are suckass hunan beings. My wife eats very little meat, but she doesn't ever try to force her feelings on anybody else. They start trying to outlaw meat, and I am gonna become Rebel Scum.

No desire to interrupt the Tiger/Jack debate, but I'm quite convinced that C-19 can be greatly tamed by Vit D. I keep coming back to Iceland. Vitamin D supplementation is critical in Nordic countries, and they do so regularly through food and pills. Their mortality rate is hanging there at about 0.4%. Every major region or population group that has been particularly bad is also known for having low Vitamin D. Every one. There were studies done on the 1918 Spanish Flu that concluded that Vitamin D greatly reduced mortality. Black Americans are dying at a rate double their population representation, and they are known for having D deficiency at more than 2x white Americans. In addition to improving immunity, Vit D also modulates the release of inflammatory cytokines, which is what is killing people now (not the virus), and what what killed them in 1918.

Guys, the vaccine already exists. It's Vitamin D. The summertime sun doesn't kill the flu, the summertime sun makes us immune to the flu.
Been taking capsules of it for a week now.

But even slavery was about a state's right to choose. I hate saying that, but it's true. I'm glad slavery was abolished, and hate that it sounds like I'm trying to defend it. I'm not. But a state's right to self govern was also front and center.
I feel the exact same way as you do, I hate slavery and discrimination, but I also hate the demonization of men who were not evil. It was a magnitudes of order more complex situation. Some people today, even very intelligent people are incapable of grasping that nuance..because revisionist history has burned that into their mind.

Saying Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson and many other Confederate leaders deserved to be hung is just about the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

Go read the differences in Shermans march to the sea, and Lees invasion of Pennsylvania...then get back to me on which man was evil.

So anytime we acknowledge that someone is the greatest ever it’s recency bias? My dad watched Jack’s career and believes Tiger is the greatest. The opposite also happens. People are so attached to the past they can’t acknowledge that anyone younger is better. There are people who still believe that Babe Ruth is the best baseball player ever. He’s not. That’s what is happening here.
I honestly see Jack and Tiger as equals. At their primes, with similar equipment every match would be a toss up.

Tiger did change the game fundamentally...he personally ushered in the bomb and gouge era, but golf lost a lot of subtlety in the process.

As with most major historical events, there are almost always multiple complex causes. But if you take slavery out of the equation, it’s doubtful that the Civil War ever would have happened.
That is true...I wish that that great evil had never been allowed on these shores. But it was, and it wasn't invented by southerners.

I wonder what great things could have been accomplished without all that chaos and destruction in the middle of the century, just as the world was entering the industrial revolution.

However I once read an interesting paper once about it that posited that the Civil War was a perfect example of "creative destruction"...and that it led to the exponential growth in the west...in other words, it was the reason that we have become who we are.

I'm so sorry to hear this, buddy. Life doesn't seem fair sometimes. Prayers your way.

Thanks to the discussion here, I just watched episode 1 of Ken Burns' National Parks doc. As I've posted here before, I'm retiring from teaching this year and moving to East TN. Well sort of. For a couple of years it will only be a staging area from which my wife and I will travel around the country visiting as many national parks as we can, and probably some state parks as well. So I'm eager to watch the rest of the series.
Good man...I am going to try to visit all the NPs in the lower 48 before I die. If we are lucky, maybe one of the kids will take us to see the Hawaii and Alaska NPs.

Ken Burns National Park doc is what inspired me. The National Parks are our greatest treasures.
