I used to have greenhouses. Aphids absolutely love pepper plants.Funny you mentioned aphids on peppers. I bought my tomato plants as seedlings from Lowe’s and I grabbed one pepper plant too, and a couple days after planting I noticed the pepper had lots of aphids on the bottom side of the leaves. I think my fabric beds held about 50 gallons but the cedar beds are a bit bigger, just over 4’ square on the inside, and a few inches deeper, so they hold about twice as much soil as the fabric beds. Still a bit tight to put 4 plants but we’ll see how they do with such minimal social distancing. When I started with the fabric beds I got a load of mushroom compost and am still using it.
I smothered the little bastards with Safer's Insecticidal Soap every week. You can make a homebrew withAny ad
Any advice for dealing with the little suckers?
Thanks for the advice and for the tutorial on the sex life of aphids.I smothered the little bastards with Safer's Insecticidal Soap every week. You can make a homebrew with
1.5 Tbsp Baking soda
1 Tbsp Murphy oil soap
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 Tbsp vinegar
1 gallon water
Mix in sprayer or spray bottle and thououghly wet top and bottom of leaves every week.
Dishwashing liquid and vegetable oil mixed in water will do about as well. The best way is to cover them in oil and soap . They are soft bodied and it smothers them. The little devils are all born from eggs as wingless females and they reproduce asexually and make 5 to 10 clones a day when they are about a week old. They later turn into males and produce sexually with the remaining females which lay more eggs. They only live about 3-6 weeks.

Tough one. There are a couple of ways. One that requires a lot of work is to pick them and their eggs off every day and drop them in a bucket of soapy water.Well, chit, I tried Neem oil, Dove, Neem Oil and Dove, and finally DAILY soakings with Sevin.
They won.
Thanks for the cocktail mixture fo sho.
Any advice on squash bugs besides lifting up the leaves and scraping the eggs off or the old "lay a shingle on the ground stomp em the next day" trick?
Adventures in home remodeling. Part 2.
There is no good news. Joy, happiness, lightheartedness do not exist in nature. It only exists as a construct imagined by mortal man. A crew of craftsmen leave me bereft of optimism. Melancholy is my life. Darkness devours even the most persist photons choking out their warming rays.
"The Money Pit", starring Tom Hanks and Shelly Long is not a comedy. It is a documentary warning all those who dare venture to remodel-ville, 'Abandon hope, all ye who enter here'. We watched the film confused. Our judgement clouded from it's importunate message by slap stick humor and comedic delivery.
.....
Ok, I feel a little bit better getting that off my chest. But the reality of today's discovery (within the first 30 minutes, mind you) looms; more rot and more damage which must be addressed BEFORE the work we wanted done can begin. Who builds a house and skips the wrap??? Who skips waterproofing the opening for windows? It doesn't save very much in materials and labor. It's simply shoddy construction. My carpenter-father is rolling over in his grave today.
Adventures in home remodeling.
Work on the deck started today. Good news, bad news. First the bad. My old 2x10 deck joist are unusable due to excess warping and crowning from improper construction practices when built. Net result is increased cost and time. More bad; the deck band attached to the house from which the joists were attached wasn't installed properly. Resulting in damage to the house band and sill in places. More bad; bad window install created water slipping in between sheathing and siding at corner of house. Sill, band, sheathing all rotted out. Unknown damage to wall studs present, too. Net result increased time and cost.
Good news: this is day 1 so it can't get any worse. Right? Right??????
She seriously doesn't. But eats salsa at the Mexican restaurant like it is manna from heaven.
I’ve never thought about it but ... We might now
you can’t go wrong with bacon .
Sorry to hear about that McD...flashing, flashing, flashing. Should have "peel and stick " behind the deck band, then at least a 4"x2" aluminum or galv. Steel "kick out" flashing to get water away from the house..which goes on top of the deck band but beneath decking boards...the top of which is "shingled" behind your house wrap. Then housewrap is taped to the metal flashing that it overlaps. Redundancy is the keyword with water penetration defense.
I am the same way as McRib. I eat (mild) salsa and love Italian food with tomato based sauces...but i would never eat a raw tomato or have it on my sammich. My wife and kids are the same. Lol...
I always say " bacon makes everything better except birthday cake." If it isnt sweets, cheese and bacon can make pretty much anything taste good IMO. What smells better than frying bacon??? If I was a chubby chaser like a buddy of mine is...I would make some bacon smelling cologne. Every big girl and wild animal in the county would be hunting him...
