None of those states will secede. They are all so broke they are heavily dependent on massive federal funding. If anything, it would be middle America that secedes if a far left government gains control of the branches of government and tries eliminating the electoral college (as they began screaming for after they lost the 2016 election), among other things. Give control of the presidential election to NY and Cali, and there would be no reason for middle America to remain in the Union.

Red states, with the exception of Texas, universally take in more from the federal government than they pay I'm taxes. The big blue states do the opposite.

Sorry for the 2004 numbers, but I guarantee they are more unequal since the 2017 tax law that raised revenue on the back of high tax states.

I honestly think it's more likely that regions will secede in blocs rather than states seceding individually. Different regions have different priorities and a lot of divisions are based around areas larger than individual states. If Balkanization does occur here in the future, that is how it will go down imo.

Stopped reading after the first paragraph, tldr, but everyone who I heard saying the media is causing hysteria and the projected numbers were not overblown are still saying the same thing. Seems you're twisting things people have said. Nobody said this wasn't a big deal.

Actually yes there were a number of people who said this was not serious and that it was being overhyped by the media. There were frequent comparisons to the flu and they expressed doubts that COVID-19 would even have the same lethality. Now you've got Fauci saying there could be 100,000 to 200,000 deaths in US. To say that "Nobody said this wasn't a big deal" is a complete rewrite of history.

But I would agree that many of us wanted to express optimism that this could be limited. The Chinese apparently have been successful in doing so but their methods would not be available in US (for example, sealing the doors of people who refused to quarantine). There are states that are still 4-6 weeks away from hitting their peak numbers. Florida and Texas particularly are going to get slammed. I don't believe this is being overblown by media anymore, I think it is reality.

Virginia has lots of military bases. I think there are like 125k active duty military stationed there. That’s all federal spending.

You're right about Virginia, huge military presence (most people don't realize even the Pentagon is basically in Virginia) and then there are places like the FBI academy in Quantico. The funny part is how so many of the southern states, who are the most critical of the federal government, get so much in funding from the federal government. Most of them have a large military footprint.

It does tell you how large the economy in California is that even with the large military presence there, probably larger than any other state, it just breaks even. Think about it, you've got San Diego with four separate bases alone, not including Camp Pendleton that's north of SD, then there's Edwards AFB, NAS Lemore, Vandenberg AFB, Beale AFB, Travis AFB. And you used to have Fort Ord and the huge Navy footprint in the SF Bay area (3 bases on the Bay) until they were all shut down in the 90's in a massive nationwide base closing movement,

The Chinese are lying fools.

Chinese govt and evil liberal media, conspiracies aside, Horseshoe Bats are the primary carriers of coronavirus strains. This particular member of the species is known to carry the matching CV strain. Anyone want to guess where he's found?

It's been studied heavily, as many in the medical scientific community have been warning of a respiratory outbreak matching this almost identical. (I am not referring to the extremists painting this as the Spanish flu or their counterparts acting like it's nothing). The more realistic, less sensational members have had models with numbers matching so perfectly, it's almost uncanny.

They've been trying to prepare and be out front but lack of funding has insured that hasn't happened.

*Again - Had the suggested precautions been implemented, the government action decisive and the public response helpful instead of rebellious, this would be over by now.
We do still have the ability to shorten the lifespan of the consequences. Fear mongering, hoarding and taking advantage for political finger pointing is not gonna make that happen.
Please, take care of yourselves, use common sense and look out for those that need assistance. Hopefully everyone here is ok financially and your parents etc., remain healthy.

Andy Beshear made douchey comments and was called out on them. You said that all the people who weren't taking the virus seriously had dropped that line of thinking and had resorted to unfairly attacking governors because of their party affiliation simply because they wanted to hate. The two have nothing to do with each other. There are still people who think the virus is over-hyped. And those aren't the same people calling out the governor.
