I seem to remember something like that going on when he first signed with SF in 93. I think Matt Williams was hitting in front of him and maybe Will Clark was still batting 3rd.
I certainly can’t speak for the man, but I think he was tired of all the virus talk and everything associated with it. Maybe just wanted a break from it all. JMO.
