Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

Contacted a friend who is in leadership with the air national gaurd in West Tennessee. States no plans for deployment in Tennessee but harder hit states are deploying. I asked him to look out for my father and his wife and my little sister who live in the same city. He urged me to stay ahead on supplies, especially if in the city. Stated he was told to expect the thing to peak around late April with things getting back to normal later May/June.

I trust him, he's not a shrinking violet and certainly in a high enough position with the gaurd that he'd be in the know to some extent. I hope this blows over sooner rather than later but thought I'd pass along.

I still can’t get my head around our reaction vs the actual numbers. Everybody that should know seems unanimously onboard, but....

It makes no sense. The hard numbers just don’t support this kind of reaction, and now we are talking about $Trillion(s) aid legislation? It’s like a bad nightmare.

The legal blogger I posted about a few days ago has taken a turn for the worse.

I wonder if they’re treating him with inhaled corticosteroids for the asthma?

Wife read something in one of her medical journals saying that steroids and anti-inflammatories had some negative effects. It’s a pretty common asthma treatment. Not sure how widely read the article was.

It really makes no sense.... during the H1N1 outbreak.... 57,000,000 Americans or 1 in 6 were sickened over a 9 month period....almost 27-29,000 were hospitalized per month and over 10,000 died in America...... the response wasn’t anywhere close to this.
I think you are way under estimating how many will die in the next 12 months . I hope you are right.

The death rate in the numbers he’s citing is way way lower than the 1.2% for this that was being celebrated here, today (and that number seems like it could plausibly increase given that the bulk of our Covid-19 cases are still ongoing.)

It was actually 15 to 18000 deaths depending where you get your numbers. Just 10 years ago during Obummers reign. The media said little about it, the gov didnt declare an emergency until 10,000 were already dead, and the economy and day to day life never skipped a beat.

But that was a dem president.

This is a repub...so its the end of the freaking world. Drives me insane. I am the primary caretaker for a 73yo with emphysema and COPD by the way. I understand it is a threat...to him. We treat it as such.

Wrecking the economy and going another 4 trillion or so in debt due to this is just stupid.

How can anyone even argue at this point when the numbers/ reaction between a decade ago and now are laid side by side?

Willfully ignorant or in denial. The meltdown when Trump is reelected will be unprecedented.

Nikki in 2024 will be even better. Cant wait.

the H1N1 - I never got it nor did anyone I know -- it was that unpublicized

was there certain areas of the US that were hit hard ? That Oct 24th was during football season and I dont recall any of the warnings - nothing was cancelled that I know of either
Other than some schools closings I can't think of anything my youngest was 2 then and stayed at home so it wouldn't have affected us.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): What People With Asthma Need to Know

You need to make sure your asthma is under control. This often requires the use of inhaled corticosteroids (and sometimes oral corticosteroids). Inhaled corticosteroids do not likely reduce your immune system’s ability to fight infections, but oral corticosteroids may. It is important to use the steps above to protect yourself to limit your exposure to any respiratory virus.

Somebody threw out some apocalyptic estimates to the right people. This is all based on estimates of what could happen imo.

My half serious guess on the "best case scenario that probably actually isn't" - next year we'll be at 20+% unemployment at the start of a years long depression with fiscal policy flipped on it's head and people are going to be griping because the virus' actual numbers don't seem to match the pain the country is feeling. It will feel like it wasn't worth it.

Hopefully that's a worst case scenario, but I do 100% believe the economic damage being done right now is unprecedented. And I also believe that this event will be used to pass controversial laws and advance political agendas that otherwise wouldn't succeed.

There is very little, if any, evidence this is not one gigantic overreaction. The press and drama-queens will cherry pick which stats makes the best sensational headline, but the underlying data fundamentals just don’t match the reaction and associated economic fallout we are self-inflicting.

If I’m wrong there is something I’m not understanding. Right now we are taking a sledgehammer to a nail and breaking the board in the process.

Wrong....georgia just started testing in capacity, and they still dont have enough test. That's why the number of active cases are jumping up the way they are. The number of people recovered in the us is way lower than deaths.....that is scary.

A death is something that is updated quickly. Patients are going to take time to recover. We are very early in the documenting process. Give it a few weeks before coming to conclusions based on available numbers in the US.
