Vescovi was key

The turnovers weren't just JJJ. Everyone was turning it over, even Bowden with the 10 second call.

I'm a different guy than Barnes. I'd have put Plavsic in on defense for a couple possessions and told him to hard foul someone. Our guys needed to get mad and go at them. Maybe a scuffle would have pissed them off.

Bowden and Vescovi were the only guys on offense ready to do that. I do think it's ridiculous how the refs allowed Wiley to push people the entire game. McLemore was doing it a little but Wiley did it nearly every rebound.

He’s just too important to this team to get 4 fouls with 14 minutes left in the game. But we have to keep in mind that he’s age-wise not even a college freshman yet. He’s essentially a high school senior. You’re going to have to take the bad with the good.

VQ made mention to the staff making it a priority to develop him at PG
Then my question I guess is what he’s doing to light them up? Getting to the basket and scoring? Shooting from outside? Setting guys up?

I think it is imperative that we have a PG that has the ability to get to the rim and finish like Bone was able to do as a JR. We really miss that this year.

Springer can do that, which is why I would like to see him at the point, but if Bailey can do it, then we have options. Maybe a season of ball-handling work with his off-hand and strength training will help Vescovi in that ability, too.

Too many PGs is never a problem.

On Vescovi, his improvement getting to the rim and a little mid range game in just 2 weeks gives me optimism that a full offseason will really help develop that part of his game. If you think about the first few games he didn’t attempt anything but 3’s, lately he’s had some rim finishes, and-one, some floaters, couple mid range jumpers.

Yes, that is sort of what I was drawing my conclusion from. The key, though, is all of that almost exclusively comes from getting to his left hand. If he can get better doing those same things going right, man...watch out. The improvement he’s made with very little practice outside of the experience he’s getting during games has been amazing to see.

Key issue was Vescovi in foul trouble and Fulkerson getting killed down low. They roughed him up the whole game.

SV's 4th foul was a back-breaker. Refs were a joke on Fulkerson's treatment...not sure how this came across on the TV but they continually admonished the Auburn player guarding Fulky (usually #24) during dead balls but refused to actually call anything.

Question is can Springer run this team next year. If he can we our SEC Champions next year. Adding Springer Johnson and Bailey who is a wildcard and only losing Bowden I like our options at the three guard positions.
If you think Springer will be the starter at PG, you'll be disappointed. Can't wait to see Vescovi working with Pons next year. It's going to be the premier show in the SEC. Vescovi will be in the top 10 in assists per game(NCAA) and Pons will average close to 18pts./g.

I am also excited to see Pons next season and maybe Fulky finally puts on 5-10 lbs and becomes a monster. I know its not a direct comparison but contextually if you look at Kobe and Jordan their few first years in the NBA to when they became dominant beats it was the weight room they both only put on a few pounds but changed their bodies totally. These days kids come out of college and sometimes HS like that but back then lifting weights as a BB player wasn't really a thing in College/HS. my point is changing one's body does not always mean packing on 20-30 lbs adding a few pounds and changing out bad weight for good can do a lot more. i.e. a 220 pound guy could gain 5 lbs and drop his body fat from say 15% to 10 and make huge gains. even though he only put on 5 actual pounds he'd have gained 15 total pounds of muscle.

The reason we play better with Vescovi is because he's the only player that can even dribble the ball. Bowden is at least average at it, everyone else is well below average.

I remember when Zack Kent was our best post player back in April and the light had come on for Jalen Johnson. I have high doubts Bailey is destroying everyone in practice. Those VQ reports are always iffy.

Bailey is also very familiar with the TN defense that he faces in practice everyday. He might not be as productive having to learn how to attack a different defensive scheme every game.

Not many places to get info about this program. Weekly videos with the coach don't yield much because the guys asking questions don't seem to know the sport. One of the reasons JJJ has been criticized so much by fans is because nobody knew he was playing hurt and many still don't know. I guess the dark cloud over information is because we're a football school?

That’s because outside of Hyams and Price nobody actually breaks news in Knoxville regarding anything. Rucker and Ramey don’t break any news ever.

if Vescovi is the Starter than he will have improved his overall athletic ability and quickness which i do hope this happens because i feel he does have the mind to raise everyone's game. But last two weeks SC and AU we have seen his struggles against athletic stronger guards. This team with a healthy Turner would have won those two games and several others.

I'd love an explanation of your first sentence.

He didn't have to be stellar but it was clear he manages our offense the best. Auburn ran off 18 in a row in minutes once he went out.
Anyone with half a brain can see he’s the best player on the team. Kudos to Barnes in finding him. Not so much for the fact that an early enrollee foreign player is your best.

Honestly I don’t think it’s about developing one hand or the other. I agree that it will help but I think his main problem was he has never played AGAINST teams or players that DEFEND the ball the way he’s seen before. He has to learn to pass quicker, maybe higher, know that defenders are tighter on him, etc..
That’s what seems to throw his game off.

Players from international leagues transition to NBA easier cause NBA players don’t defend the ball that much. It’s more offensive.

Those things are all also true, but he is VERY one-hand dominant, to his own detriment.

The things you mention are the things that lead to TOs. What I am referring to are things that limit his ability and skill-set. He needs work in both areas, but the things you mention will come with experience and teaching. The things I am talking about will only come with skill work and time in the gym.

To mesh the points together, being extremely left-hand dominant has gotten him by because of his high basketball IQ and competition. He has stepped up to the highest level of basketball he’s ever played, now, so he will have to add to his bag of tricks and become a threat to either side.

You’re vastly overrating Springer’s dribbling abilities. His handle isn’t as tight as you think. Santi is extremely one hand dominant with his left, but he’s still a superior ball handler to Springer
