Auburn bans student for Vescovi comment

I'm sorry, what in the world does that have to do with what I just said? Where did I say I thought that was ok either? How does that somehow justify what was yelled at Santiago?

Because fat shaming gets a pass. What about making fun of a presidential candidate's lack of height? Or a POTUS's or Speaker of the House's dental work? What about calling the former Vandy coach Baldy? IMO, the outrage for some kid's trash talking at a ball game is over the top. He said nothing derogatory. He told him to go home to his own country and likely only said it to irritate SV and very likely doesn't care where he goes after leaving their cow pasture. It was dumb. Getting kicked out of the game might even be excessive minus a warning.

I feel like I'm talking to a wall. How can you not grasp telling a kid to leave a country is worse than calling someone bald or fat. He absolutely said something derogatory. This argument is clearly going nowhere and I've given it more time than it deserves. Have a good one

He is from Uruguay. Kid told him to go home. Not nice, but it's not necessarily outrageous.

You're right. Some of the reactions are baffling to me. People are acting like this guy was seriously lobbying for Vescovi to be sent back to Uruguay. He didn't call a press conference or organize a demonstration. He didn't publish a manifesto. He didn't lobby his congressman. He shouted a dumb comment from the stands at a sporting event -- something he probably thought would get a laugh from his buddies. No one was injured or had their rights violated.

It's Thunder, no point in even trying. He just doesn't see it. But yes it was wrong and clearly worse than being called bald or fatty. Those are playground insults.

Saying go back to X country is xenophobic. Especially when you throw in "This is America." Even if he didn't mean it the way he said it.

If I said the N word but was just playing around, it is still horrible.

Now maybe the kid had a few drinks or whatever and was feeling liquid courage I am not with this whole "You guys are so PC, this if fine" crap.

Says the guy that doesn't care about saying something that's offensive to Christians.

This entire world has gone straight vagina...come on, that’s a joke. It’s called freedom of speech...and it’s not hate speech, stupid maybe but jeez the snowflakes are winning right now.

Right like SV should be extradited for his bad play in the game. Send him packing, I heard the statement and though it caught me by surprise I hope it was taken with the grain of salt it carried.

I know earlier in the posts I went full Sunday School teacher on some post concerning using God's name in vain as being offensive and still stand on it. I am sure I have said many things that would be offensive to others. Although there have been more instances that I can count, do you think I have went to HR on those that have and continue to do so. NO. I kind of see that it is on them after that point. I have always considered that it just makes them look that much smaller in front of those around them. The boy shouldn't have screamed what he did, but hey, it is a high energy atmosphere and it is not like he threatened him or used a racial slur. He screamed for him to go back where he came from. Yes he added this is America. Well, the poor fool didn't realize that Uraguay (probably wrong for all the spelling police) is in AMERICA. Should he be punished? As I mentioned earlier, maybe a ban the rest of the season (really is borderline harsh for a teenager that has probably not been taught any better) but not lifetime. I would about guarantee the publicity he is getting is probably punishment enough. A great learning moment for the individual would be to meet SV personally, apologize, and take if from there. Good thing the whole arena at Thompson Boling is not hot mic'd. The place would be empty. I guess when they have the VOL spell out, the V's had better keep quite because the O's may be offended. I know this is an exaggeration, but where does it stop. Why cant we all get along.

For all calling this racist, would really like a little clarification. Seems as if definition of words are changing on a daily basis. I never heard anyone say you are inferior because you are from Uruguay. This 59 year old man just wants to know.

I never defended what Banks said, I said he should be given another opportunity. I didn't feel what he said to the officer(s) should cost him his collegiate career. In your opinion the Banks situation was worse. In mine this one is.
Then why should this kid be punished more severely than Banks? Both statements were stupid

The go back to your country is a racist/xenophobic statement. It has been used as a racial slur in America for a while. Try traveling around the world and have someone yell that at you. I was told to go back to my country while traveling in Korea, it felt very racist.
So it’s about hurt feelings? Gotcha

Racism to millienials is anything that “sounds like” it could hurt feelings or to disagree with someone’s politics

Much ado about nothing. Such a soft country now (and I'm not even a conservative and I think it). I've had so much worse said to me over my life and I just laughed it off, sometimes laughing along with the person that said it. And I've definitely said worse thinking I was being funny (which turned out a lot of the time I just stuck my foot in my mouth). This kind of comment happens all the time at the state level (Tennessee folks degrading Kentucky folks, and vice verse, for example) and it's considered a statement of state pride. So what's the big deal at the national level. Comment should have just been totally ignored by all parties - the player, the team, the fans, the media. That would have been the most effective way to message the perp that he just stuck his foot in his mouth.

Anybody that thinks this is a big deal probably should avoid message boards and go find there safe space. This is just a fan heckling.

Racists defining racism. I mean, what I meant to say was, "what is your definition of racism" ? I wouldn't want feelings getting hurt.
