Who cares if someone is offended? I think the kid was an idiot too but it’s really not that big a deal and not worth assaulting someone for. There is only a ban from him sitting in student section. He can buy a ticket anytime otherwiseI've spent too much time on this thread already.
So I will leave with this.
We don't know this guy's intent. Maybe it was trash talk (horrible choice of words if so), maybe it was racist. Maybe it was both.
What we do know is that is not an acceptable comment. We do know that many foreign Nationals could and would be offended by that. We know there is a history of nativism in this country. We do know there are a lot of other terms that could have been used.
He is banned now. Some like me think that is too little, others think it is too much. At the end of the day, this situation could have been avoided by just thinking before speaking.
I never defended what Banks said, I said he should be given another opportunity. I didn't feel what he said to the officer(s) should cost him his collegiate career. In your opinion the Banks situation was worse. In mine this one is.Yes because you’re saying that one kid saying stupid offensive thing is worse than another kid saying an actual worse thing
What's worse? If I said to you to go home or f*** you, clown? More virtue signals.
If I said that to anyone at work, I'd be fired.
If I said that in the classroom, I'd be fired.
A stadium excuses trash talk because that is part of the game, but this is just ridiculous.
Think about kids who heard that? I just don't think him being banned is enough.
That's an odd hill to die on. If you wanna be in favor of one of our players from a different country being told to leave the US then go right ahead. Says an awful lot about you. And LOL at that being a "virtue signal". Yeah pardon me having a problem with one of our guys being told he needs to leave the US for no good reason at all.
I never said it's okay. I've said that the calls to punish the Auburn kid are ridiculous. It's quite ironic when the criticism comes from posters writing even more offensive comments. I'm more bothered by the battering of our players by Auburn's defenders than by a dumb Barn student talking smack. I'm not agreeing with the comment that Santiago needs to leave, but the virtue signaling is off the charts. I doubt that the Auburn kid even truly hates foreigners and I doubt that Santiago is as thin skinned as some of the VN posters are exhibiting.
Go back to Norway = racism lol
How about go back to Ohio? Is that racist too?
Firstly, I haven't read the whole thread, so idk what punishments people have been calling for in regards to the student. Am I ok with him being banned? Absolutely. Do I think it should go any further than that? No probably not. And secondly, what I said about the Auburn student pales in comparison to telling Santi to leave the country.
The go back to your country is a racist/xenophobic statement. It has been used as a racial slur in America for a while. Try traveling around the world and have someone yell that at you. I was told to go back to my country while traveling in Korea, it felt very racist.
There gave been calls to give him an ass kicking and to expell him from school. Basically some want the young man's life to be ruined because he was over the top with some smack talk at a basketball game. I think his neighbors telling him to STFU would have been plenty. He told SV to go home. He didn't use racist language as many are on here insisting is the correct interpretation.
Obviously I am not in the camp of physically harming the kid, that doesn't solve anything. Educating him on why it's not cool to tell someone from a different country to leave the US would be a good start. I'm all for students poking at opposing players. But there's really no sense in taking it to the level of telling foreign players they should leave the country
